from Scouting The Refs,
The updated NHL Rule Book is hot off the presses with some minor tweaks for the 2023-24 season. Here’s the rundown on the changes:
Terminology
The league has made two changes to word choices throughout the rulebook:
- “Linesman” has been changed to “Linesperson“
- “Fouls” are now termed as “Infractions“
Rule Updates
Helmets Required In Warmups (Rule 9.6)
The NHL added a requirement during last season to mandate helmets in warm-ups. That change – which applies to anyone joining the league in 2019 or later – is now officially part of the rulebook:
I'm a dumb male, but I can't imagine feeling better about myself when hockey changes to "linesperson"..... I polled the females in the family, and their collective response was "Huh?"
You're missing the implied reason for the change, Wingding. In last night's prospect's game, one of the zebras was a woman (at least I think it was a woman). My guess is they'll be female refs in the NHL within the next three or four years (after they've honed their skills in the new women's professional hockey league).
I think they should have just added the words "or lineswoman" I think everyone would be better with that than linesperson. I don't call them police-person or fire-person.
If it's a LGBTQ thing then perhaps the NHL should fix the warmup jersey fiasco first before sticking their head back in that catch 22.
I don't like the helmet in warmups rule. Doubt any of the chinstraps are tightened and guys will go to a sans face-shield for warmup now.
