from Mark Spector of Sportsnet,
The National Hockey League’s entry draft may be rich this summer, but come July 1, the unrestricted free agent market isn’t nearly as fecund. Over the next week or so we’ll take a look at the market, and make some predictions on who might end up where.
We’ll start with the goaltenders, a UFA group that to our eye includes only two bonafide starters — and we’re including Devan Dubnyk alongside Antti Niemi, even though Dubnyk has really only shown his worth for half a season with the Minnesota Wild.
There are plenty of teams in the goaltending market: the Buffalo Sabres, Edmonton Oilers, San Jose Sharks, Dallas Stars, St. Louis Blues, and a few others (like the Calgary Flames) looking to find the right netminder to pair up with the guy they already have.
They’ll likely try to satisfy themselves by trade, a market that includes everyone from over-priced veterans Niklas Backstrom and Kari Lehtonen, to a break-out goalie like the New York Rangers’ Cam Talbot, who looks ready to become a No. 1.
