The Three Best NHL Players to Never Win the Stanley Cup

11/30/2023 at 10:00am EST

Winning the Stanley Cup is the ultimate goal for every professional hockey player. However, despite their talent and dedication, some of the greatest players in NHL history have never won the famed giant trophy. And it looks as though Connor McDavid might well fall into that bracket.

McDavid's Woes

Ever since being drafted as the first overall pick of the 2015 NHL draft by the Edmonton Oilerse, Connor McDavid has proven himself to be the finest hockey player on the planet. He has racked up award after award including the Art Ross trophy for the last three years consecutively (and a whopping five times altogether). However, he's yet to bring success to the Alverta outfit.

Before his drafting, the Oilers were without a postseason appearance in a decade. McDavid and Co. put an end to that unwanted streak in 2017 and they've reached the playoffs in each of the last four campaigns. That upturn in form prompted hockey odds providers to price Edmonton as one of the favorites for the Stanley Cup during the preseason. Unfortunately for them, however, they've had to endure a miserable start to proceedings and currently sit second bottom of the Pacific Division. As such, they are now considered huge outsiders, a stark contrast to the start of the campaign.

The recently injured McDavid will be hoping he doesn't end up on this list after his career is said and done. Here are the three best players in NHL history who never won the Stanley Cup.

Marcel Dionne

Marcel Dionne was a talented center who played for the Los Angeles Kings and Detroit Red Wings over the duration of his illustrious career. Despite scoring over 700 goals and amassing over 1,700 points - putting him fifth all-time in terms of scoring - the gifted French-Canadian player never won the Stanley Cup. He was a nine-time All-Star and won the Art Ross Trophy twice, as well as securing an induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1992. Sadly for him, he played for some terrible teams, and never got past the second round of the playoffs.

Phil Housley

Phil Housley is widely considered one of the best offensive defensemen of all time. He played for many teams during his career, including the Buffalo Sabres, Winnipeg Jets, and Calgary Flames, but was never on a team that could make a serious run at the trophy. Despite being a defensive stalwart, he still managed to score over 1,200 points in his career and secure All-Star honors on seven occasions. Despite his success, he never won the Stanley Cup, but he did represent Team USA in the Olympics and World Cup of Hockey.

Pavel Bure

Pavel Bure was a scoring machine who dazzled fans with his speed and skill. He won two Rocket Richard Trophies as the NHL's top goal scorer and was a force to be reckoned with in the playoffs. His prowess wasn't enough - the Russian Rocket played during a time when the Vancouver Canucks were perpetually stuck in the tough Western Conference, and he never got his hands on the coveted trophy. But his highlight-reel goals and infectious smile won over legions of fans, and he remains a favorite among hockey's cognoscenti.

Steeb

Isn't Dino Ciccarelli the player with the most goals or points or something without a Cup?
