The Detroit rookie center Damien Brunner flew down the ice, trailing on a breakout in overtime. Anaheim goalie Jonas Hiller had a tough choice: cover the leading Gustav Nyquist to his right, or Brunner on the left.
Hiller targeted Nyquist, diving and interrupting the rush with a poke check. But Hiller could not corral the wobbling carom, and Brunner jumped on the rebound to give the Red Wings a 3-2 home victory on Monday. The series is tied, 2-2, with Game 4 on Wednesday in Anaheim.
Hiller, 31, comes from Felben-Wellhausen, a village of 2,500 in the heart of Switzerland’s German-speaking territory. Brunner, 27, grew up in Kloten, a suburb of Zurich best known for its airport.
Hockey is growing in Switzerland, thanks to its popular pro league and more players reaching the N.H.L. There were eight Swiss players in the N.H.L. this season, six of whom are in the playoffs: Brunner; Hiller and Ducks teammate Luca Sbisa; Mark Streit of the Islanders; and Rafael Diaz and Yannick Weber with the Canadiens.
