The Pittsburgh Penguins Will Face The Boston Bruins In The 2023 Winter Classic At Fenway Park

NEW YORK (April 13, 2022) – The National Hockey League (NHL) today announced additional details for the 2023 Discover NHL Winter Classic®. In February, the NHL announced that the Boston Bruins would host the regular-season outdoor game at Fenway Park; the NHL announced today that the Pittsburgh Penguins will be the Bruins’ opponent as well as the date of the game, which is scheduled to take place on Monday, Jan. 2, 2023. In addition, the NHL announced Discover as the title sponsor of the 2023 NHL Winter Classic®, marking the second consecutive year the longtime NHL partner has been the title sponsor of the event. The game will be televised exclusively on TNT in the U.S. and on Sportsnet and TVA Sports in Canada.

The 2023 Discover NHL Winter Classic® will mark the fifth NHL regular-season outdoor game for the Bruins and the second time the game has been hosted at Fenway Park, home of Major League Baseball’s Boston Red Sox. The Bruins are 3-1-0 in their four previous regular-season outdoor appearances: a 2-1 overtime victory against the Philadelphia Flyers in the 2010 NHL Winter Classic®; a 5-1 loss to the Montreal Canadiens in the 2016 NHL Winter Classic® at Gillette Stadium; a 4-2 win against the Chicago Blackhawks in the 2019 NHL Winter Classic® at Notre Dame Stadium; and a 7-3 win against the Flyers in the 2021 NHL Outdoors at Lake Tahoe™ at Edgewood Resort.

The 2023 Discover NHL Winter Classic® will mark the sixth regular-season outdoor game for the Penguins, who are 2-2-1 in their five previous appearances: a 2-1 shootout win against the Buffalo Sabres in the first-ever NHL Winter Classic® at Ralph Wilson Stadium in 2008; a 3-1 loss to the Washington Capitals in the 2011 NHL Winter Classic® at Heinz Field; a 5-1 loss against the Chicago Blackhawks in the 2014 NHL Stadium Series™ at Soldier Field; a 4-2 win against the Philadelphia Flyers in the 2017 NHL Stadium Series™ at Heinz Field; and a 4-3 overtime loss against the Flyers in the 2019 NHL Stadium Series™ at Lincoln Financial Field.

The game continues the tradition the League established in 2008 of hosting a regular-season outdoor game at the onset of the new year, with the 2023 edition marking the 15-year anniversary of the first NHL Winter Classic® in Buffalo. The Bruins and Penguins have faced off in 219 games during the regular season, with Boston holding an 89-point edge over Pittsburgh (BOS: 121-69-29—271 points; PIT: 77-114-28—182 points). Boston and Pittsburgh have faced off five times in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, with the Bruins winning three of five series, including their most recent matchup in the 2013 Eastern Conference Final.
