Dubas will sell (what he can). He went all in to try to squeeze a run out of the remaining core...it didn't work and now comes the rebuild....but the problem is the contracts (just like it was with the Wings):
Karlsson's will be 3 x 10M, Letang (turning 37 in April) will be 4 x 6.1M, Graves (turning 29 in May) will be 5 x 4.5M, Crosby (37 in Aug) 1 yr x 8.7M, Malkin (38 in Jul) 2 yrs x 6.1M, Rust (32 in May full NMC) has 4 yrs x 5.125M, Rankel (31 in May with an 8 team NTC) 4 yrs x 5M, Reilly Smith (33 in April with an 10 team NTC) 1 yr x 5M. Tristan Jarry (29 in April with a 12 team NTC) 4 yrs x 5.375M left.
I mean they have Jeff Carter (39) and Jake Guentzel (29) as rentals....so they could get something but where else is the value?
There is no value to get from a majority of these players. The Pens have 2 retained salary transactions left so it's possible they jettison someone and get a return even with a bad contract, but all of those vets look like they are in decline.
Dubas is a win-now-pay-later GM, not a rebuild guy. At least he hasn't been in TOR or PIT.
The NHL Now crew on the Pens.
I watched last nights' PENS vs ISLES game. Two teams with similar situations, but I think the Pens is more dire. Sid is playing pretty well. On the broadcast - Brendan Burke and Butch Goring were pointing out that the Pens have had pretty good goaltending and indeed - they are a + 11 on the season in goal differential. Other bubble teams (NYI are - 22 / NJD - 6 / WAS are -32 / PHI are + 2 / Tampa + 2 and DET + 15) PIT has 2 in hand on NYI, DET and WAS 3 on PHI 4 on Tampa.
I would not declare them dead just yet (But I would for Washington)
But the 'eye' test - they look cooked to me. I would not be bullish on the Pens chances for the playoffs - but if they go off on a heater - then they have some guys who can show the others how to win. Isles gifted them a loser point last night - which talks volumes about their chances too.
What will Gary Bettman do here? His favorite team (the Penguins) are suffering! Maybe time to award another outdoor game where Pittsburgh plays Pittsburgh? :)
McIndoe was talking about the Pens's goal differential, and they've had two games that they won 7-0 and 10-2. So +15 of that +12 is from two games.
Interesting....but a lot of their players have a + rating too. But this explains a lot Thanks!
Bettman will make sure they get a top draft pick.😡
Patrick Ewing will pick the chilled envelope with the Pens name on it! :)
