The Ottawa Senators Will Forfeit a First Round Draft Pick

update 2:34pm,

NEW YORK – TORONTO (Nov. 1, 2023) – The National Hockey League today announced that the Ottawa Senators will forfeit a first-round draft pick for their role in the July 2021 trade of Player Evgenii Dadonov from the Senators to the Vegas Golden Knights and the subsequent, invalidated March 2022 Dadonov trade between the Golden Knights and the Anaheim Ducks.

Ottawa will forfeit its first-round draft pick in one of the 2024, 2025 or 2026 Drafts. The determination as to which pick will be forfeited will be made by Ottawa within 24 hours of the conclusion of the Draft Lottery for that year. The League will have no further comment on the matter.

I'm confused how this is the Sen's fault. Dadonov was there for most of the season, drawing a paycheck, and nobody in the Vegas organization thought to look at the terms of the guy's contract? They own the contract and everything in it. It's not like the existence of the NTC list was a secret only Dorion knew.

Am I missing something?

I'm not a lawyer, or Canadian, but that sounds like violation of contract for non-disclosure of information.

That is almost unbelievable. Under the circumstances it is also hilarious.

from Sportsnet,

Steve Staios, president of hockey operations, will handle the GM duties in the interim, Andlauer said.

"My first 30 days as owner of the Ottawa Senators has exceeded all expectations," Andlauer said. Unfortunately our last 10 days have not been as much fun for me."

In that, Andlauer was referring to the team's 4-4-0 start, a bevy of injuries that have beset the team, a 41-game suspension to forward Shane Pinto for violating the NHL's gambling policy, and then Wednesday's discipline by the league with respect to the Dadonov trade.

Andlauer said the league shared a 73-page report with him last week detailing its investigation into the invalidated Dadonov trade. When asked why it took so long for the league to issue a ruling with regards to something that occurred in March of 2022, Andlauer said that was something to ask the NHL.

Andlauer, who was only installed as owner on Sept. 21, said the club's failure to pass on Dadonov's no-trade list to the Vegas Golden Knights when he was traded there in 2021 ultimately "embarrassed the league and pissed off two other NHL clubs."

That error, which Andlauer called "downright negligent" and "not that complicated" later caused issues when the Knights tried to send the now 34-year-old to Anaheim, who were on Dadonov's list of destinations he couldn't be traded to. The league later had to invalidate that Vegas-Anaheim trade because of this.

After speaking to NHL commissioner Gary Bettman last Tuesday and familiarizing himself with the league's report, Andlauer said he sat down with Staios later in the week to discuss the possibility of making a change at GM. That ultimately led to a conversation with Dorion.

"Last night, sat down with Pierre and discussed the situation and how serious it was and how I couldnt come with a lesser penalty," Andlauer said. "And it was decided over dinner it would be best to part ways.

I think I figured it out. It wasn't that OTT didn't send VGK his list, it's that OTT didn't send the whole part of the contract that says he even HAS a NTC. That would be more fitting of the punishment, but it would be way better to fine the org, rather than punish the fans for the actions of the previous ownership.

All I see is a comedy of errors leading to division rival go boom.  :D

If the owner had no clue about this - shame on the NHL and the prior owner.   His investment just took a hit (losing a valuable 1st Round pick be it a player or acquisition currency)

So let me drink all this in.  Ottawa gets docked a first round draft pick for negligent non-disclosure of an NTC in a trade transaction.

Chicago allows a rape scandal, attempts a cover up, and then gets to draft someone who could be the best player of his generation.

Makes sense to me NHL.
