The level of frustration couldn’t be much higher after the Canadiens’ latest defeat — a 4-3 overtime loss to the St. Louis Blues on Saturday.
“We deserved the point we got, we deserved to get two points,” said defenceman P.K. Subban. “We did a lot of good things, we made it difficult for them to get out of their zone. We played a good game, but we can be better.
“In my short time in this league, I’ve learned that things get tougher in the second half,” Subban said. “Teams are looking for points and they tighten up and we have to do the same thing.”
The Canadiens outshot the Blues 49-22 and had the lead at 2-1 and 3-2, but a couple of mistakes allowed St. Louis to send the game into overtime and emerge with the win when Jori Lehtera took advantage of a turnover and beat Mike Condon at 2:04 of overtime.
“Good teams win that game, average teams win that game,” said captain Max Pacioretty. “We did some good things, but there were little things that hurt us.”
Coach Michel Therrien said he liked his team’s effort and emotion and noted the Blues had a single scoring chance in the final period.
The Canadians now sit in the second wild card spot in the East.
