from Mark Spector of Sportsnet,
You may have noticed on an NHL game sheet or roster report this season: The league doesn’t use the term “linesmen” anymore.
Beginning with the 2023-24 season, they are “linespersons.”
Which begs the obvious question: Is the NHL close to following in the footsteps of the NBA and the NFL in employing female officials?
Well, meet Kirsten (pronounced: KEER-sten) Welsh, the AHL’s only female lines… Person.
"Linesjudge or line judge," mayhaps?
Silly.
This is a Boomers issue (as evident by needing to add how to pronounce the name). As millennials have enough Kirsten in population to have encountered the name before (I have a cousin with the name and Starbucks had no issue calling it).
Hockey being a sport heavily influenced by Canadians: is it that surprising to gender neutralize something. Canada did it with their national anthem years ago (us vs sons).
Just a hop and a skip from a pronoun....
Oh, the horror!
