Recap Of Today's GM Meeting

11/15/2022 at 5:24pm EST

from Nicholas J. Cotsonika of the NHL website,

The NHL general managers met for about five hours in Toronto on Tuesday, mostly going over fine points of rules and setting up in-depth discussions for their meeting in Palm Beach, Florida, from March 13-15.

The NHL hockey operations department showed the GMs videos of nuances in the game now and new moves that might challenge interpretations of rules in the future.

"It's a compelling product, it's evolving, and you have players doing all sorts of things we wouldn't have even thought about 25, 30 years ago," NHL director of officiating Stephen Walkom said. "We had some unique plays that we could show them, like a player picking the puck up on a shootout attempt and carrying it in lacrosse-style and keeping it below his shoulders. When's it legal? When's it illegal? What can he do when he gets to the net?"

One GM suggested adding video review to see if a player shoots the puck over the glass in the defensive zone, which results in a delay of game penalty. NHL senior executive vice president of hockey operations Colin Campbell said the idea comes up from time to time, but it's difficult to get the right camera angle and consistent TV replays.

As gruesome as Evander Kanes skate-slashed wrist was on Nov. 8, what is equally gut-wrenching for Kane and the Edmonton Oilers is that it was mostly preventable.

Kane was not wearing Kevlar-infused and cut-resistant material, which is widely available to NHL players, when Tampa Bays Pat Maroon accidentally stepped on his wrist, leading to a deep laceration that went to the bone. With immediate medical attention required to stop the bleeding, Kane quickly underwent surgery to repair the cut. He is expected to be out until February or March.

Kanes injury was the genesis of an agenda item about player equipment on Tuesday at the NHLs bi-annual GM Meetings here following Hockey Hall of Fame weekend.

The NHLs 32 GMs were shown video of not just Kanes injury, but an even more recent but equally queasy incident at the Karjala Cup in Finland where Finnish player Waltteri Merela had his wrist sliced open.

What a dang joke.  "It's difficult" so let's not try.  I don't think it's so difficult - we see plenty of replays at home where the video clearly shows the puck and whether or not it was deflected.

What is difficult is knowing if the puck crossed the goal line when a goalie is on top of it.  Does that mean we shouldn't use video review to see of the puck crossed the line?
