BRUINS PLAYERS EXTEND STREAKS IN SEVEN-GOAL OUTBURST

The Bruins erupted for seven goals – including four in the third period – to defeat the Blue Jackets and improve to 5-2-1 in December. Boston scored seven goals in a game for the first time since Feb. 20, 2016 at DAL (7-3 W).

* David Pastrnak collected an assist to extend his point streak to a career-high 12 games (5-9—14), while teammate Brad Marchand registered 1-1—2 to push his career-high point streak to nine contests (6-8—14). Pastrnak’s 12-game run is the longest point streak in the NHL this season.

* Tuukka Rask (16 saves) improved to 6-0-1 in his last seven decisions dating to Nov. 29 (1.59 GAA, .937 SV%, 1 SO) after posting a 3-8-2 record in his first 13 appearances of the season (2.91 GAA, .899 SV%).

* Forwards Jake DeBrusk (1-2—3) and Danton Heinen (1-2—3) became the first pair of Bruins rookies to each record three points in a game since March 12, 1988, when Craig Janney (3-0—3) and Bob Sweeney (0-3—3) did so against the Quebec Nordiques.

DEVILS DEFEAT DUCKS IN HENRIQUE’S RETURN TO NEW JERSEY

Brian Boyle collected three helpers while celebrating his 33rd birthday – including the primary assist on the game-winning goal – to help the Devils improve to 19-9-5 (43 points) this season, tied for the most points in the Metropolitan Division standings (w/ WSH).

* Boyle (647 GP) has registered three points in consecutive contests (2-1—3 on Dec. 15 vs. DAL); prior to Friday, he had recorded three points in a game just once in his NHL career.

* ICYMI: Playing against his former club for the first time, Ducks forward Adam Henrique collected two points – including a highlight-reel goal that saw him flip the puck to himself – in his return to New Jersey, where he collected 122-135—257 in 455 games over his first eight NHL seasons. Henrique received a standing ovationfrom fans following a tribute video during the first period.

LIGHTNING AIM FOR EIGHTH CONSECUTIVE WIN

The League-leading Lightning (24-6-2, 50 points) look to extend their season-high winning streak to eight games when they visit the Golden Knights (21-9-2, 44 points) at T-Mobile Arena. Tampa Bay, who have won seven consecutive games for the first time since a nine-game run from Feb. 18 – Mar. 5, 2016, can join the Kings (8-0-0 from Nov. 25 – Dec. 9) as the only teams to put together an eight-game winning streak this season.

NHL CELEBRATES 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF FIRST GAMES
Tuesday marks the 100th anniversary of the first games in National Hockey League history. On Dec. 19, 1917, the Montreal Wanderers defeated the Toronto Arenas 10-9 at Westmount Arena in Montreal and the Montreal Canadiens skated to a 7-4 victory over the Ottawa Senators at Dey’s Arena in Ottawa.

BY THE NUMBERS: 100 YEARS OF THE NHL

Over the past century, 40 different franchises have competed in the National Hockey League, combining for 358,737 total goals (including 1,833 shootout-deciding goals) across 58,997 total games (54,705 regular-season, 4,292 playoffs) played at 139 different venues. Notables from 100 years of the NHL:

* The highest-scoring day in NHL history was Jan. 23, 1993, when 103 goals were scored across 12 games. The highest-scoring contest that day was between the Oilers and original Jets, an 8-5 victory for Winnipeg.

* Four games in League history have featured at least 20 goals, including two 21-goal games – the Canadiens defeated the Toronto St. Patricks 14-7 on Jan. 10, 1920 in Montreal and the Oilers defeated the Blackhawks 12-9 on Dec. 11, 1985 in Chicago.

* A total of 7,663 players have appeared in at least one NHL game (regular season or playoffs), including 1,007 players who have won the Stanley Cup since the NHL assumed full control of the trophy in 1927.

* Fifty-one different players have led the League in single-season scoring, including five players who have posted the most points at least five times: Wayne Gretzky (11x), Gordie Howe (6x), Mario Lemieux (6x), Phil Esposito (5x) and Jaromir Jagr (5x).

* Twenty-two players have appeared in at least one NHL game as both a skater and a goalie. Boston’s Jerry Toppazzini was the last skater to play as a goalie, entering goal for 33 seconds in a 5-2 Bruins loss against the Blackhawks on Oct. 16, 1960. The last such instance in the playoffs came during Game 2 of the 1928 Stanley Cup Final when Lester Patrick – then serving as head coach of the Rangers – famously entered for the final 35:05 in a 2-1 overtime victory for New York, who went on to win the Cup.

* There has been only one game in NHL history without any goals or penalties – the Maple Leafs and Blackhawks contested a penalty-free, 0-0 draw on Feb. 20, 1944 at Chicago Stadium. Seven playoff games have been penalty-free, including only two in the expansion era (April 6, 1969 and May 27, 2011).

MAPLE LEAFS REVIVE ARENAS NAME TO CELEBRATE 100 YEARS

The Maple Leafs (20-13-1, 41 points) will wear Toronto Arenas inspired sweaters as a tribute to the franchise’s original name when they host the Hurricanes (14-11-7, 35 points) in a matinee affair at Air Canada Centre on Tuesday.

* The Arenas faced the Montreal Wanderers on the first day of NHL play on Dec. 19, 1917, with Wanderers defenseman Dave Ritchie scoring the first goal in League history 1:00 into the contest. Toronto’s Reg Noblescored four times, only to be outdone by Montreal forward Harry Hyland’s five-goal outing in a 10-9 Wanderers win.

* The Toronto team carried the Arenas name for the first two NHL seasons in franchise history (1917-19) and captured the Stanley Cup in the League’s inaugural season.

* On Saturday, the Senators and Canadiens skated in the 2017 Scotiabank NHL100 Classic at Lansdowne Park in Ottawa to commemorate the first-ever meeting between the Canadiens and the original Senators on Dec. 19, 1917. Pre-game festivities included a re-enactment of that game 100 years ago, a 7-4 Canadiens win.
