SNEAK PEEK AT MONDAY’S ACTION

The NHL will return from the All-Star break with a two-game slate on Monday. A collection of notes and statistics as the season enters its final 501 games can be found below.

LIGHTNING, KUCHEROV LEAD THE WAY
The Lightning (37-10-2, 76 points), who are led by Nikita Kucherov (22-56—78 in 49 GP), occupy first place in the NHL standings this season, five points ahead of the Flames (33-13-5, 71 points). Tampa Bay, which has not relinquished the position since Nov. 29, 2018, can capture the Presidents' Trophy for the first time in franchise history.

* In the last 15 years (since 2003-04), the eventual Presidents’ Trophy winner was also in first place at the All-Star break in six campaigns: 2005-06 (DET), 2007-08 (DET), 2008-09 (SJS), 2009-10 (WSH), 2015-16 (WSH) and 2016-17 (WSH).
^Any reference to the All-Star break includes schedule breaks for the Winter Olympics in 1997-98, 2001-02, 2005-06, 2009-10 and 2013-14

* Kucherov, who has found the score sheet in 38 of 49 games this season, leads the League with 56 assists and 78 points in 2018-19. He can become the second player in franchise history to win the Art Ross Trophy; he would join Martin St. Louis, who did so in 2003-04 (38-56—94 in 82 GP) and again in 2012-13 (17-43—60 in 48 GP). His 78 points were the most in a season by a Lightning player at the All-Star break, eclipsing the previous high of 71 set by St. Louis in 2009-10 (22-49—71 in 61 GP).

* Kucherov (born June 17, 1993) is one of 19 players age 25 or younger averaging at least one point per game this season (min. 25 GP). In the last 25 years (since 1993-94), only three other players under 26 years of age accumulated 78 or more points in a season at the All-Star break: Pittsburgh’s Jaromir Jagr in 1995-96 (38-51—89 in 45 GP), Washington’s Alex Ovechkin in 2009-10 (42-47—89 in 54 GP) and Pittsburgh’s Sidney Crosby in 2009-10 (42-36—78 in 61 GP).

OVECHKIN CONTINUES PURSUIT OF MORE HARDWARE
Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin leads the League with 37 goals this season (37-20—57 in 50 GP) as he pursues another Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy, aiming to break a tie with Bobby Hull (7x) and become the first player in NHL history to finish atop the League’s goal-scoring race eight times.

* Ovechkin (33 years, 201 days as of April 6, 2019) can become the sixth player in NHL history to lead the League in goals at age 33 or older. The only players to do so: Bill Cook in 1932-33 (36 years, 165 days), Gordie Howe in 1962-63 (34 years, 358 days), Nels Stewart in 1936-37 (34 years, 82 days), Maurice Richard in 1954-55 (33 years, 228 days) and Phil Esposito in 1974-75 (33 years, 45 days).
^Ages based on final day of respective regular season

* He is three tallies shy of becoming the fourth player in League history to record 10 or more 40-goal seasons – a list topped by Wayne Gretzky, who had 12. Only one player in NHL history has recorded at least 10 40-goal seasons with one franchise: Mario Lemieux (10 w/ PIT).

* Ovechkin, who owns a seven-goal lead in the Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy race, can become the first player to 40 goals in a season for the eighth time in his NHL career. The only other players in League history who were the first to reach the 40-goal mark in a season five or more timesare Bobby Hull (6x) and Phil Esposito (5x).

* Ovechkin (644-535—1,179 in 1,053) is one regular-season point shy of passing Sergei Fedorov (483-696—1,179 in 1,248 GP) for the most in League history by a Russian player. Ovechkin and Fedorov skated in 67 regular-season games together with the Capitals from Feb. 29, 2008 – April 11, 2009.

DID YOU KNOW?
Only one season in NHL history has concluded with Russian-born players leading the League outright in goals, assists and points; this occurred in 2008-09, when Washington’s Alex Ovechkin paced all skaters with 56 goals (56-54—110 in 79 GP) and Pittsburgh’s Evgeni Malkin led the NHL with 78 assists and 113 points (35-78—113 in 82 GP).

* Aside from 2008-09, only two other seasons in NHL history have concluded with players born outside of North America leading the League outright in goals, assists and points – 1998-99 (Teemu Selanne: 47 G; Jaromir Jagr: 83 A; Jagr: 127 P) and 2002-03 (Milan Hejduk: 50 G; Peter Forsberg: 77 A; Forsberg: 106 P).

SURGING FLAMES CAN ACHIEVE RARE FEAT WITH FIRST-PLACE FINISH IN WEST
The surging Flames (33-13-5, 71 points) own an active nine-game point streak dating to Jan. 5 (8-0-1) and occupy first place in the Western Conference standings, six points ahead of the Sharks (29-16-7, 65 points).

* Calgary is one of four teams who were not part of the 2018 Stanley Cup Playoffs currently holding a postseason position. The Flames can become the 10th team and second in as many years to conclude a season atop their conference after not qualifying for the Stanley Cup Playoffs during the previous campaign.
^Since 1974-75 when teams realigned into conferences

* The Flames boast four 20-goal scorers this season, the highest such total among all 31 teams (Johnny Gaudreau: 29 G; Sean Monahan: 27 G; Matthew Tkachuk: 24 G; Elias Lindholm: 21 G). It marked the second season in franchise history in which the Flames featured four or more players each with at least 20 goals at the All-Star break and first since 1987-88, when five skaters combined for the feat (Joe Nieuwendyk: 40 G; Hakan Loob: 33 G; Mike Bullard: 32 G; Joe Mullen: 28 G; Brett Hull: 24 G).

2018 NHL DRAFT CLASS MEMBERS CONTINUE TO SHINE
Members of the 2018 NHL Draft class Rasmus Dahlin (No. 1), Andrei Svechnikov (No. 2), Jesperi Kotkaniemi (No. 3) and Brady Tkachuk (No. 4) have each collected at least 20 points this season.

* The only other time each of the top four picks had 20 or more points before the beginning of February in the campaign immediately following their draft was 1973-74, when Denis Potvin (No. 1), Tom Lysiak (No. 2), Dennis Ververgaert (No. 3) and Lanny McDonald (No. 4) combined for the feat.

* The rookie scoring race is led by Canucks forward Elias Pettersson, who paces all first-year players in goals, assists and points in 2018-19 (23-22—45 in 40 GP). He currently sits 11 goals and 15 points shy of matching the single-season franchise records for most by a Canucks rookie.
