CROSBY NETS HIGHLIGHT-REEL OT WINNER TO END 6-5 THRILLER IN EDMONTON

In a matchup between two of the highest-scoring players over the past three seasons, Sidney Crosby (2-0—2) played the hero in overtime, dancing through the attacking zone to lift the Penguins past Connor McDavid (1-1—2) and the Oilers in a contest that featured five tying goals.

* Crosby, who scored his first two goals of 2018-19 (2-5—7), netted his first tallies in a head-to-head matchup with McDavid, lifting Pittsburgh to a perfect 5-0-0 record in those contests (EDM: 0-2-3).

* Crosby registered his 14th career regular-season overtime goal to tie Ilya Kovalchuk for second-most among active NHL players, behind Alex Ovechkin (22). Crosby and Kovalchuk share eighth place all-time.

* Tuesday marked the third game already this season to feature five tying goals - and second involving the Penguins (also PIT vs. WSH Oct. 4 and TOR at CHI Oct. 7). There were three such contests in the previous four seasons combined. The last campaign to feature more such games was 2010-11, when there were seven.

* Tuesday’s contest saw three lead changes and neither team leading by more than a goal, while also marking the 13th game of 2018-19 to feature at least 10 combined goals.

SHARKS’ THIRD-PERIOD COMEBACK TOPPED WITH RARE GAME-WINNER

Five different San Jose skaters scored as the club overcame a pair of deficits, highlighted by a multi-goal, third period comeback, to end the Predators’ win streak at five games. Trailing 4-2 with less than 10 minutes to play, the Sharks scored three goals, capped by the winner from Brent Burns (1-2—3) in the final three minutes of regulation.

* Burns, who has points in six straight games (2-8—10), netted his 34th career game-winning goal, with an assist going to fellow Norris Trophy winner Erik Karlsson. It marked the 24th time in NHL history (regular-season and playoffs) that two Norris Trophy winners teamed up on a game-winning goal - and just the 14th such tally actually scored by one of the two blueliners. The last such goal in the regular-season came on March 11, 2009, when Anaheim’s Scott Niedermayer scored in overtime, with assists to Chris Pronger and forward Todd Marchant.

* Tuesday was the 29th time in franchise history that the Sharks overcame a multi-goal, third-period deficit to win - and just the 13th such victory in regulation (last: Nov. 22, 2015 at CBJ).

COMEBACK QUICK HITS

Seven of eight games contested Tuesday featured at least one tying goal, including five in which the winning team overcame a deficit of at least one goal.

* Nearly half of games contested so far in 2018-19 have seen a comeback win (45%; 58 of 129).

* There have been 18 games this season won by a club that overcame multiple deficits in a contest.

* Tuesday marked the second straight day that a team overcame a multi-goal, third period deficit to win - the Jets did so Monday against the Blues. The Oilers are the only other club to do so this season: Oct. 16 in Winnipeg.

* Including Tuesday, 16 games this season have featured at least three tying goals (combined or by one team). In 2017-18, a total of 123 contests included three or more tying goals - the highest such total since 2005-06 (136).

* Edmonton became the seventh team this season to score at least three tying goals in a game.

PASTRNAK, BERGERON AMONG ELITE COMPANY AS HOT STARTS CONTINUE

The high-scoring trio of David Pastrnak (2-2—4), Patrice Bergeron (1-2—3) and BradMarchand (0-1—1) each reached the score sheet again to power the Bruins to a 5-2-2 record. Through nine games, Pastrnak (10-5—15) now shares the League lead in goals with Auston Matthews (10-6—16), while Bergeron is tied for the most points in the NHL with Matthews and Mikko Rantanen (4-12—16).

* Pastrnak became the sixth different player in franchise history to score at least 10 goals in the team’s first nine (or fewer) games of a season. Phil Esposito did so twice, including 1973-74 when he set the franchise record for goals in the month of October (14 G in 10 GP).

* Bergeron and Pastrnak became the 15th and 16th different players in franchise history to record 15 or more points through the team’s first nine games of a season. Teammate David Krejci (2015-16: 7-8—15 in 9 GP) - who tallied 1-1—2 Tuesday - is the only other Bruins player to do so in the past 17 seasons.

* Overall, there were 21 prior instances of a Bruins player posting 15+ points through nine team games before Bergeron and Pastrnak, including four by Esposito and three by Bobby Orr. This is the seventh time that a set of Bruins teammates have combined for the feat in the same season (last:Adam Oates, Dmitri Kvartalnov and Joe Juneau in 1992-93).

MATTHEWS VS. LAINE HIGHLIGHTS DOUBLEHEADER IN U.S. AND CANADA

A national doubleheader in both the U.S. and Canada will open with the fifth head-to-head matchup between Toronto's Auston Matthews and Winnipeg's Patrik Laine, the top two picks in the 2016 NHL Draft.

* It will mark the first-ever NHL regular-season game featuring two Canadian teams to be produced by NBC Sports, and the first game in Winnipeg for NBC’s DocEmrick since Dec. 29, 1995, a contest in which his broadcast partner Eddie Olczyk scored for the original Jets.

* Matthews (84) and Laine (83) rank second and third in goals since entering the League in 2016-17, behind seven-time Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy winner Alex Ovechkin (90).

* Matthews has scored 67 of his goals at even strength - the most by any player since his debut. Laine, meanwhile, has 32 power-play goals, second only to Ovechkin (38) in that span. Both Matthews and Laine have scored the first goal of a game 19 times, trailing only Patrick Kane (20) on that list since 2016-17.

* The Jets own a 14-0-1 record in regular-season home games dating to March 2, the longest such run by any club since the Capitals had a 17-game run from Dec. 23, 2016 to March 4, 2017 (16-0-1).
