MAPLE LEAFS’ NYLANDER NETS OT WINNER ON PENALTY SHOT
William Nylanderscored on a penalty shot in overtime to lead the Maple Leafs (27-18-5, 59 points) to their second win in three contests and first victory at the United Center since Feb. 12, 2003 (3-1 W).
* Nylander, who ranks second on the Maple Leafs with 10-24—34 in 50 GP, became the first player in franchise history and just the 12th NHL player to score a penalty shot goal in overtime during a regular-season game. Last season, two players accomplished the feat: Devils defensemanAndy Greene (Nov. 11, 2016 at BUF) and Canucks defenseman Ben Hutton (Nov. 17, 2016 vs. ARI).
* Nylander’s winner came six seconds into the extra frame, matching the NHL record for fastest regular-season overtime goal. He became the fifth player in NHL history and second this season to accomplish the feat, joining Red Wings forward Andreas Athanasiou (Jan. 3 vs. OTT).
PEARSON CAPS KINGS RALLY WITH OVERTIME GOAL. . .
Jake Muzzin tied the game in the third period and Tanner Pearson scored with 26.1 seconds remaining in overtime to help the Kings (26-18-5, 57 points) collect their second win in three games.
* Muzzin and Anze Kopitar (0-1—1), who will make his fourth career All-Star appearance this weekend and leads the team with 19-32—51 in 49 GP, each extended their point streaks to five games (Muzzin: 1-4—5; Kopitar: 1-5—6).
* Did You Know? Since the introduction of 3-on-3 overtime at the start of the 2015-16 season, the Kings lead all NHL teams with 30 wins in the extra frame.
. . . DESPITE THE LOSS, FLAMES EXTEND POINT STREAK
The Flames (25-16-7, 57 points) earned at least a point for the 10th consecutive contest dating to Dec. 31 (7-0-3). Calgary became the fourth team in 2017-18 to register at least one point in 10 or more games, joining Boston (13-0-4 from Dec. 16 – present), Vegas (12-0-1 from Dec. 3 – Jan. 2) and Colorado (10-0-0 from Dec. 29 – Jan. 22).
* The Calgary/Atlanta Flames franchise has recorded a point streak of 10 or more games 14 times in their history. In fact, Calgary posted a 12-game point streak in 2016-17 that spanned 27 days (11-0-1) – one shy of the longest such run in franchise history (12-0-1 from Nov. 10 – Dec. 8, 1988).

Lightning forward Brayden Point (19-24—43 in 48 GP) has been added to the Atlantic Division roster for the 2018 Honda NHL All-Star Game in Tampa as a replacement for injured teammate Victor Hedman.

THIRTY TEAMS HIT THE ICE IN FINAL GAMES BEFORE ALL-STAR WEEKEND
Thursday’s schedule features 30 of the NHL’s 31 teams in action on the final day of games before 2018 Honda NHL All-Star Weekendin Tampa from Jan. 27-28. This marks the 12th time in NHL history that 15 games will be contested on the same date (and fourth of five instances this season). The Kings (26-18-5, 57 points) are the only idle club. Some highlights include:
* The League-leading Lightning (33-12-3, 69 points) look to remain atop the overall NHL standings prior to hosting 2018 Honda NHL All-Star Weekend – where four players will represent the host club: Steven Stamkos, Nikita Kucherov, Andrei Vasilevskiy and Brayden Point. TheLightning visit the Flyers (24-16-8, 56 points), who enter the contest on a four-game winning streak.
* The Western Conference-leading Golden Knights (32-11-4, 68 points) – who sit one point back of the Lightning for first place overall – can become the first expansion team from the NHL, NBA or MLB to enter the All-Star break with the top overall record in their respective league. Elias notes that the 1976-77 Denver Nuggets, who entered the NBA from the ABA, ranked second in the league at the time of the All-Star break in their inaugural season.
* The Bruins (28-10-8, 64 points), who have won four consecutive games, put the NHL’s longest point streak of 2017-18 on the line (13-0-4) when they visit the Senators (15-22-9, 39 points). Boston can become just the fifth team in the last 20 seasons to register a point streak of 18+ games – which would tie the second longest point streak in franchise history.
* Multiple players enter Thursday’s action on lengthy point streaks including Penguins forward Sidney Crosby (3-13—16 in 8 GP), Stars forwardsAlexander Radulov (6-9—15 in 8 GP) and Jamie Benn (4-6—10 in 8 GP) and Sabres forward Jack Eichel (5-9—14 in 7 GP).
