The Ducks are 0-1-1, and there is zero cause to push the panic button. There was also enough to review in losses against San Jose and Vancouver to apply a little extra pressure to a team that’s expected to win far more than it will lose.
As they host Arizona on Wednesday, Ducks coach Bruce Boudreau does want to see his team push itself as it works its way into the schedule.
“Well, we’re not where we want to be,” Boudreau said. “We plan to be better the next game and then the next game until you get to your final resting spot. I think we tried to push the envelope a little bit today in practice.
“I think they responded well. We’ll see how they respond tomorrow.”
For starters, the Ducks have scored one goal in 125 minutes. Sami Vatanen did the honors early in the second period Monday but that was the only puck they could get past Vancouver goalie Ryan Miller in regulation and overtime.
The Ducks finished with 29 shots on goal in the 2-1 shootout loss. But several prime scoring opportunities were passed up. Goaltender Frederik Andersen is empty in the win column despite stopping 66 of 69 shots.
“We had a lot of looks,” Boudreau said. “We were trying to make the plays, making the passes instead of shooting pucks at the net. You don’t score unless you shoot the pucks. And we haven’t been shooting them as much as we need to.”
