The Philadelphia Flyers have asked for permission to interview Nonis for the vacant Flyers GM job, which is a nice place for anyone, like Chuck Fletcher, to land. - How is a team with Erik Karlsson, Brent Burns and Marc-Edouard Vlasic as inept as the San Jose Sharks seem to be?

- Best free-agent signing of the NHL summer: Buffalo goalie Carter Hutton. The 32-year-old career backup was 8-0 with a 1.97 goals against average and a .936 save percentage on the Sabres recent 10-game winning streak, with seven of those wins coming in overtime or shootout. He’s not a backup anymore.

- Carolina wonders if it hasn’t found something special on waivers in ex-Leaf Curtis McElhinney, another career backup, who has been 7-2-1 with a 2.10 goals against average and a .930 save percentage with the Hurricanes.

- Hurts to say this, but Brian Burke is the runaway rookie of the year in Canadian hockey media. The great bag of wind has become must-listen radio and must-watch TV.
