By Mike,

The nominees for the King Clancy Trophy have been officially released, with top league player names that include Carolina Hurricanes Justin Faulk, Anaheim Ducks Ryan Getzlaf, Chicago Blackhawks Duncan Keith, Boston Bruins ZdenoChara and Buffalo Sabres Zach Bogosian. The prize is awarded to players who've demonstrated a strong commitment to their communities by means of worthy humanitarian works and by becoming important leadership figures, within and outside the Hockey rink. Each and every nominee is presented by their respective teams and the final winner is picked by a select group of NHL execs under the direction of commissioners Bill Daly and Gary Batman. The 2018 edition of the Clancy Trophy awarding ceremony will take place Wednesday, June 20th, at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.

Big rewards for some seriously big games

The winner and two runner-ups will receive a monetary reward that they will then use in charity groups or works of their choosing; the main prize consists of $40,000 USD, while the smaller second and third place spots will take with them a $5,000 donation. This unique trophy was christened after Francis "King" Clancy, who became a well-loved and cherished figure in the NHL and was voted to feature among the 100 Greatest NHL Players of all time at the 2017 Centennial Celebration gala. Clancy performed several roles within the league apart from his player persona such as coach, manager and referee; he also invested his time in developing several projects as goodwill ambassador for the NHL.

Making the Cut

The foundation in charge of the King Clancy Trophy has taken over the awarding of charitable donations covered since 1988 by the NHL Foundation Player Award; the nominees for the trophy will be screened for several criteria in broad-reaching social endeavors that include their personal investment of time and resources in works of public good, their commitment to particular causes and initiatives, the proper use of their sports star influence, the success of their engagement with the local communities and the creativity applied to the execution of their charitable undertakings. Over the course of two decades, the NHL entity has distributed nearly $500,000 USD between the charitable organizations selected by the winners. The three finalists for the trophy will be announced on Monday, April 30th.
