from Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun,
- There may come a time — perhaps soon — when John Tavares is asked a most uncomfortable question.
Is the captain of the Maple Leafs willing to make a most unselfish gesture and waive his no-trade arrangement?...
- Nathan MacKinnon is starting to pull away from the field in the Hart Trophy race as the NHL’s most valuable player. Matthews may score close to 70 goals, but he can’t be the MVP the way his team is playing. Sidney Crosby and Nikita Kucherov are in similar positions in Pittsburgh and Tampa. Both are playing like MVPs, but their teams are no sure thing to make the playoffs. Maybe Connor McDavid, winning more and scoring less, in Edmonton will turn it up in the second half. This would make him a candidate again. But no one on a top team is doing more than MacKinnon, although Boston’s David Pastrnak is not all that far behind.
more on the first topic plus other notes, most of them Toronto related...
Unless he was wearing different team's pajamas - I don't think Tavvy will unwind his no movement clause - why should he? He walked away from a fanbase who loved him. John's a good guy, but he is all business. Now if the Leafs said a different team would extend him 5x $ 11mm (his current cap hit) that is a horse of a different color. But who would do that. His scoring pace is going down a bit and 11mm for a 2nd line center is not market price. I think he will reject the offer, if one were made.
Meanwhile, the Leafs lost again, which always warms the cockles of my heart, and is good for the Wings. They started Slowwww and did not get good goaltending, but the heat has to be on. Does anyone else find this quote by Domi odd/telling? How would K eefe, who is feeling some heat, feel reading this?
"William Nylander said the Leafs were missing a little bit of competitiveness from puck drop, and it was evident which side was getting coached by Tocchet.
Probably one of the best coaches in the world right now, Max Domi said. You watch these guys play, theyre always ready to go. https://www.sportsnet.ca/nhl/m...
Tavares shouldn't waive anything.
