from Derek Van Diest of the Edmonton Sun,
Edmonton Oilers forward Evander Kane was in good spirits rejoining his team at the FLA Live Arena on Friday, knowing things could have been much worse when sliced by a skate blade in Tampa on Tuesday.
Sporting a large splint on his left arm, Kane had surgery to repair the damage done when Tampa Bay Lightning forward Patrick Maroon inadvertently skated over his wrist. The damage was extensive and the scene gruesome as Kane raced to the locker room holding his wrist, leaving a massive pool of blood behind on the ice.
“I kind of got taken down, and I just remember feeling something hit my wrist, and then I just saw blood shoot up and then I just put my hand over my glove and when I looked down, I could see what was going on, and I knew I was in some trouble and needed some help immediately,” Kane said. “So I was just trying to get off the ice as fast as I could to try and get some help.
“Once I got to the bench and the room, the doctors and the training staff were in there right away and kind of took over.”...
“I had never seen that much blood before,” Kane said. “The first thing I thought, is that I don’t want to bleed out. I figured I had cut an artery. I didn’t know, but with that much blood I thought that’s what might be going on. I just wanted to put pressure and stop the bleeding.
“I cut pretty much everything down to the bone. I was really lucky they were able to reattach everything. They actually had to take some vein from from a different part of my arm to help reattach the artery. I got really unlucky and then lucky. I’m thankful that I’m going to be able to make a full recovery.”
