Closing Out The GM Meetings

03/20/2024 at 2:41pm EDT

from Dan Rosen of the NHL's website,

NHL general managers completed three days of meetings Wednesday, and Commissioner Gary Bettman said the group is leaving with a sense of the game being in a good place with strong revenues and exciting races for the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

"We talked about a lot of little tweaks that we can focus on to maybe make things a little bit smoother, but nothing that I would categorize as problems," Bettman said. "I think we're in a good place and we're looking forward to the stretch drive and beginning the playoffs."

On Tuesday, the GMs voted to propose several minor adjustments to rules, including allowing penalties subject to coach's challenges to include delay of game penalties for pucks shot over the glass and certain high-sticking minors.

The proposals next go to the NHL/NHLPA Competition Committee for approval before the NHL Board of Governors for ratification.

Bettman and deputy commissioner Bill Daly touched on a number of other topics in their post-meeting press conference.

Long-term injured reserve

This topic was not on the agenda at the meetings because it is a collectively bargained issue that involves the NHL Players' Association, but the usage of LTIR for injured players as it relates to the salary cap was discussed Sunday when the six members of the GMs' executive committee met with Bettman and Daly.

from Michael Russo and Chris Johnston of The Athletic,

With Arizona Coyotes owner Alex Meruelo intent on trying to purchase 95 acres of land in Northeast Phoenix at an auction this summer, NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly suggested Wednesday that if the Coyotes strike out in their latest attempt to build an arena, it may be too late to relocate the franchise in time for next season.

Asked directly if there would be enough time to pivot, Daly said, Probably not. I dont believe so.

Of course, when it comes to the endless saga around Arizonas attempt to find a permanent home, nothing is official until its official and there always seems to be a further update that changes everything.

Relocating a franchise isnt something that can happen overnight, although the Atlanta Thrashers relocation to Winnipeg seemingly did when it was announced out of the blue on May 31, 2011. But with that announcement came the actual sale of the Thrashers to True North Sports & Entertainment, an ownership transfer and relocation that was approved by the Board of Governors on June 21, 2011.

that these Olde Hockey Men (tm) dont see a problem with the endless regroups in OT tells you all you need to know about this league is run.

TreKronorChet

It's a possession game, anyways - why should that be any different in OT?  Back to back rushes down the ice are essentially just a faster-paced, higher-converting version of a shootout.

I'm sure many owners cannot stand Bettman with his favoritism and draft rigging, but they are making money. That explains it unfortunately.🤨

Note to GMs:
1) Ditch the stupid delay of game penalty for accidentally shooting the puck over the glass.
2) Ditch the stupid 'shoot out'. Give each team one point at end of 5 minute overtime.
3) Keep the play going even if the puck is played with a high stick.
4) Tell the linesmen to pick up the broken sticks near them even while the play continues.
5) Fire the imbecile doling out suspensions in the league discipline office and come up with something that is more objective and fair to all teams.

With the conclusion of their annual meetings in Florida, the National Hockey Leagues general managers have put forth several minor rule changes and suggestions for consideration for the 2024-25 season.

All of these recommendations must go through the NHLs competition committee and then the leagues Board of Governors for final approval before being made official....

Delay of Game - Puck out of Play (Coachs Challenge)

The GMs agree to use the Coachs Challenge to take down a penalty for a puck out of play. They also agree that the Coachs Challenge would only apply to delay of game penalties when the puck is deflected off a player, a stick or the boards and not on a judgement call on how the puck left the defensive zone (such as batted pucks).
