via Pierre LeBrun of ESPN,
Many Toronto Maple Leafs fans were up in arms about the Brad Boyes goal being overturned Monday night by a coach’s challenge.
It was indeed offside and the correct call was made on video review. The complaint from some Leaf fans however is that lots of time elapsed between the illegal zone entry and the Dallas Stars had chances to clear the puck before Boyes scored.
This is all true.
But this is also why the rule is as is. For years, the league’s hockey operations staff and the 30 general managers debated and debated and debated how to time the offside review. They could never agree on the proper amount of time or formula. It’s why it took so long for the coach’s challenge to see the light of day. It only did once everyone agreed that zone entry and once the puck leaves the zone was the only clean way to do it.
Colin Campbell, the NHL’s director of hockey operations, said Tuesday there’s no appetite to re-visit that.
The coach’s challenge will be on the GMs meeting agenda next Tuesday in Toronto but more from the goalie interference viewpoint and just generally how everyone feels the new video review mechanism is working.
