Brad Treliving Named General Manager Of The Toronto Maple Leafs

05/31/2023 at 1:25pm EDT

Toronto Maple Leafs press release,

Toronto Maple Leafs President and Alternate Governor Brendan Shanahan announced today that Brad Treliving has been named the hockey club's General Manager. Treliving becomes the 18th General Manager in Maple Leafs history.

"I'm very pleased to welcome Brad into the Maple Leafs organization," said Brendan Shanahan. "Brad brings a wealth of knowledge from his years of experience as a General Manager and hockey executive in Calgary, Arizona and beyond. He has earned tremendous respect amongst his peers throughout his years in the NHL and has built excellent relationships at all levels within the game. We are confident that Brad's leadership and strategic vision will elevate the Maple Leafs in our continued pursuit of a championship."

"I am very excited and honoured to join the Toronto Maple Leafs as General Manager," said Brad Treliving. "I would like to thank Brendan, MLSE and its Board for their support throughout this process. I'm thrilled to join an Original Six team and recognize how much the Maple Leafs mean to this community. This is a very exciting day for my family and I."

Treliving joins the Maple Leafs after spending the previous nine seasons as General Manager of the Calgary Flames. During his tenure in Calgary, the Flames owned a .569 points percentage with a regular season record of 362-265-73. Treliving also served as co-General Manager of Canada's 2016 IIHF World Championship team, which captured a gold medal in Russia.

Prior to his time with the Flames, Treliving held the role of Vice President of Hockey Operations and Assistant General Manager with the Phoenix Coyotes for seven seasons, where he also served as the General Manager of the Coyotes' American Hockey League (AHL) affiliates, the Portland Pirates and San Antonio Rampage.

In 1996, Treliving co-founded the Western Professional Hockey League (WPHL) and served as the league's Vice President and Director of Hockey Operations for five years. In May of 2001, he helped facilitate the merger of the WPHL and the Central Hockey League (CHL) and was subsequently named President of the CHL, a position he would hold for seven years before joining the Coyotes organization.

During his playing career, the Penticton, British Columbia native suited up professionally for five seasons in the AHL, the ECHL and the IHL after playing in both the BCJHL and WHL as a junior.

Treliving, 53, and his wife, Julie, have two daughters, Ryann and Reese.

Treliving better be a magician because somehow he needs to insert at least 4 hearts.

I don't like the way Dubas built the Leafs. I don't think half the cap to 1/6 oz the roster is a great way to build a team. I like the depth over superstars approach. You always need you're leaders, but I think the Leafs were way too top heavy.

For a team that can't win playoff series they sure picked a GM with terrible record regarding that.

As Calgary GM for just about 9 years the Flames had 5 seasons with playoffs--winning only 3 rounds (counting the COVID tournament's qualifying round of 2020): and never stringing it together by winning 1 round in 2015 (not his players), 2020, and 2022.  In 2021-22 they finished with 111 pts winning the Pacific division (but losing to McDavid's Oilers in the 2nd round).

He has a history of being a Ken Holland disciple by handing out large contracts to aging players:

July 1, 2015: Michael Frolik (27 yrs old at the time) 5 years for 21.5M.

July 1, 2016: Troy Brouwer (31 yrs old at the time) 4 years for $18M. Bought out on Aug 2, 2018.

July 2, 2018: James Neal (30 yrs old at the time) 5 years for $28.75M. July 19, 2019: Traded from Calgary to Edmonton for 2021 3rd round pick (Kirill Kirsanov) and Milan Lucic.

Oct 9, 2020: Jacob Markstrom (31 yrs old at the time) 6 years for $36M (full NMC throughout)

July 28, 2021: Blake Coleman (30 years old at the time) 6 years for $29.4M

Aug 4, 2022: Jonathan Huberdeau was signed to an 8 year extension for $84M (after his trade with a full NMC throughout)

Aug 18, 2022: Nazem Kadri (32 at the time) 7 yrs for $49M.

Oct 22, 2022: MacKenzie Weegar (30 at time) 8 year extension for $50M

He also lost a top UFA for nothing (Johnny Gaudreau) and traded Matthew Tkachuk for Huberdeau and Weegar to try to not repeat the same mistake. He has has lost on trades of other superstars: trading Dougie Hamilton, Micheal Ferland, and Adam Fox('s draft rights) to Carolina for Elias Lindholm and Noah Hanifin. And the Brian Elliott for 2016 2nd # 35 (Jordan Kyrou) and 2018 3rd #74 (Niklas Nordgren).

He cycles through coaches: inheriting Bob Hartley, then hiring Glen Gulutzan (2 years), former Wing coach Bill Peters (1 year), Geoff Ward (3/4 of a season), and Darryl Sutter (fired after Treliving was gone).

The only positive i see is his ability to build a quality defensive group with mostly spare parts.
