Interesting, not the team I thought he'd end up with but Lou was getting desperate.
Looking forward to Kaz's take on the trade.
On paper i think Lou hit a home run
Kaszycki and his Krew were just boarding for the first time something in the making longer than the last time the Isles won the Cup - a Long Island RailRoad train departing from Grand Central - 40 years (it seems) after it was proposed. I then got a few texts and I thought they were kidding. So first - you hear what you gave up. While not happy about the first pick leaving - that it's protected for first 12 picks is mitigating my fear. Gotta give to get - Raty will be a very good player and Beau is hot and cold. Here's hoping that VCR just traded for pick # 32 in the entry draft!
About an hour prior - I was on my phone arguing with my account rep over my season tix package and had some grievances about the services and we tried to work things out for next year and this trade just gave me more comfort :)
The other thing giving us agita is that they have not announced an extension yet. That said - this is not another Ryan Smyth thing. I would expect Bo to sign an extension. His agent (Patrick Morris ) and the agency overall have Matt Martin, Casey Cizikas, Cal Clutterbuck, Josh Bailey, JG Pageau and Zach Parise as clients.... and now Bo Horvat. One would think Lou will get a deal done. Citing Pageau as a recent example.
Think about down the middle - Horvat, Brock Nelson, JG Pageau, Casey Cizikas and Mat Barzal are centers. One of them will ride shotgun with Bo - likely # 13.
If the team fizzles and Bo does not sign - the trade deadline is March 3. He can be moved again.
What's not to like?
Naturally - I hate to see first rounders go. But if the Isles get on a roll...............what a difference a week makes! I was counting them out - but they won the last 2 games.
I think VCR fans will like Raty. He has a good vibe and he can play. Beau needs the change of scenery. If Bo signs - this is a very good deal. I think Vancouver did ok too. Isles got the best player today.
Andrew Gross of Newsday reports that VCR retains 25% of salary of Horvat. This means that Beau and Bo's salaries the isles cover = even things out. I had not heard that before his reporting from the presser
This is a big upgrade for NYI but I don’t think it gets them into the playoffs. Also, it seems clear from the return they don’t know yet if they can re-sign Horvat. This looks desperate from Lou if you ask me. They could have had a shot at Bedard—do we know what the conditions are on the pick?
Top 12 protected? This looks better and better for NYI especially if they can re-sign him. Sounds like that’s all TBD.
interesting trade, and partner. I'm unsure I agree with the rationale on the NYI side, I think in their shoes, I would've added a 3rd if the VKC gave me permission to use the extended allstar break to workout a contract before the trade.
Maybe Lou wants to get him him into the fold, see his work ethic in practice, as a person/professional, how he fits into the lineup and scheme, before he gives him the long term deal, but you would think that diligence was done considering the package in return.
Question for the cap geeks, if VKC retained 25%, and NYI post trade craps the bed, and Lou decide to flip him again, can they eat another 25%, making him a very low cost (cap wise) rental for the 3rd team? If so, that makes this an interesting decision for him.
NYI can move and retain 25%, wouldn’t surprise me at all if they can’t extend him.
Now let's see 'em go out and nab Kane.
