An Eight-Year Contract For Bo Horvat And The New York Islanders

02/05/2023 at 3:14pm EST

via the New York Islanders,

The New York Islanders have agreed to terms with forward Bo Horvat on an eight-year contract. He was acquired from the Vancouver Canucks on Monday, Jan. 30.

This past weekend, Horvat represented the Islanders at the 2023 NHL All-Star Weekend, along with forward Brock Nelson and goalie Ilya Sorokin.

Horvat, 27, is averaging over a point-per-game with 54 (31 goals and 23 assists) in 49 games with the Canucks this season, his ninth in the NHL. This season, Horvat is second in the NHL in face-offs taken (1,116), and is averaging a 56% win percentage.

The Canucks selected Horvat ninth overall in the 2013 NHL Draft. In 621 games, all with Vancouver, the London, Ontario native has 201 goals and 219 assists for 420 points. He served as the team captain of the Canucks for the past four seasons. Horvat has competed in 23 career Stanley Cup playoff games, scoring 11 goals and five assists for 16 points. He represented Vancouver at the 2017 NHL All-Star Weekend in Los Angeles, CA.

Horvat played three seasons with his hometown London Knights of the Ontario Hockey League. The Knights won the J. Ross Robertson Cup (awarded to the OHL Champion) twice while Horvat played in London. In 2013, Horvat scored a league-leading 16 goals in 21 playoff games and was awarded the Wayne Gretzky 99 Award as playoff MVP.

In 2018, Horvat was a member of Team Canada's World Championship team alongside current Islanders Josh Bailey, Mathew Barzal, Jean-Gabriel Pageau and Ryan Pulock. Horvat scored seven points (three goals and four assists) in 10 games during the tournament.

Interesting. This should assist Yzerman's negotiations with Larkin.

Double edged sword in my mind. In a vacuum, yes its a good comparable and should bring the price down. But this also narrows the market on available centers, and can drive the price up.

The UFA List is pretty abysmal. Filter out the old guys and you're basically left with nothing. Max Domi is your next best candidate, and that's a significant drop off in production. And don't even look to prospects for reinforcement because the franchise depth at center is non-existent for the next couple years.

Larkin still has lots of leverage.

This is the compromise for both sides, this IS the comp, Horvat is actually slightly more productive than Larkin.

Goals yes, total points no. And Larkin is a year younger. Also horvat is shooting 21% this year vs 14% career avg, tied his career high in goals at 31 only 49 games in, is that pace sustainable? If Yzerman is really dug in at 8x$8m I don't think he's happy to see this deal.

Nice work Lou!   Time will tell how Vancouver did here, but the Isles did well.   It will help with season ticket renewals for sure.  They had Bo at practice today playing on a line with Bailey and Barzal.   Monday night @ Phila and Tuesday night @ UBS Arena vs. Seattle.   Looking forward to attending on TUE and THU - when they play Anthony Beauvillier and the Vancouver Canucks.

Beau(Villier) will be missed.  Well liked player who scored the last goal at the Nassau Coliseum history.   He will be a good add for Vancouver, play him with J.T. Miller!

I don't follow the Isle so I'll get your opinion. They seem to be scuffling, much of the team is on the wrong side of 30 now (or near 30) and there is very little roster flexibility the next 2 seasons. How long do you see the team's playoff window being open still? Or maybe is it still open in a brutal Eastern conference and considering they missed the playoffs last year? I have no doubt Lou will make tough calls if he needs to, are there prospects ready to step in?

Youre right. This was overall a terrible idea for the Isles. Now they can miss the playoffs by 2 points instead of 10 for the next few seasons. I understand why Lou felt he had to make a move, but over time Ive soured on this trade and signing.

If I can find a good stream tomorrow night, I will be watching. I would love to see the Islanders kick some butts.

There is no way this deal was not negotiated prior to trading for Horvat
