A Bad Look For The Arizona Coyotes

12/15/2023 at 2:13pm EST

from Frank Seravalli of The Daily Faceoff,

The NHL and NHL Players’ Association are investigating a gap in protocol which resulted in Arizona Coyotes defenseman Juuso Valimaki lingering in a Dallas hospital for hours without care last month with a severe facial injury after taking a 93 mph slap shot to the mouth against the Stars.

Valimaki, 25, was transported to a Dallas hospital by ambulance from American Airlines Center after an undeflected point shot from countryman Jani Hakanpaa drilled him in the face on Nov. 14.

Sources told Daily Faceoff that Valimaki was dropped off in the emergency room, like any other patient, and left to advocate for his own care with his wife – who happened to be in Dallas at the road game – and a Coyotes team employee. After initial observation, the overworked Dallas hospital staff told Valimaki to find a local hotel and come back in the morning, that their attention was turned toward more critical incoming trauma patients such as gunshot victims.

It's called triage people. He was assessed and then put in a queue for medical attention.

The poor hockey player was treated like everyone else.

Imagine that humanity.

---but, but, he's special.

NOPE. If there are stabbing, gun shot, strokes, heart attacks, breathing difficulties, etc, etc they go first.

Wait time in the ED is not a function of dollars available.

"overworked hospital staff" welcome to the party pal.

There is nothing the Coyotes can do except turn towards an oral surgeon by placing them on-call during games.

Why do you think the ED posts wait times? https://hospitalstats.org/ER-W... Hint: it's about a 3 hour wait currently at 2:40 pm on a Friday. Wait until after work and it will become a 4 hour wait. Wait until after 7:30pm when staff thins out and it increases.

Wingding

Anyone with relatives in the medical field can tell you stories that would stun the average American. The corporate types have long taken doctors and nurses in particular for granted, and many of them are burned out. They created an incredibly inefficient system that relies very heavily on travel/ contract nurses. They pay more to get less work done due to unfamiliarity with local staff and the simple things like where supplies are kept. My son has been a nurse for 15 years and his ER unit runs 7-8 people short EVERY SHIFT. His wife works in a different ER and her situation is identical.

When I told my son about this story his response was, "Is he dying? If not, take a seat."
