The Boston Bruins are the National Hockey League (NHL) team from Boston, Massachusetts, USA with a stellar professional record. With six Stanley Cup Championships under their belt, the Bruins are one of the most popular ice hockey teams in the US and are known around the world. The team has been active since its formation in 1924 and continues to make new records every so often.

Here are a few fun facts about the Boston Bruins that you might not be aware of.

Oldest US Team

The team was formed in 1924 due to the efforts of Charles Adams. At almost a century old, they are the oldest ice hockey team in the United States. They also hold the title of the third oldest ice hockey team, which is still active today.

Original Six

The Boston Bruins are a part of the Original Six teams. Along with Chicago Blackhawks, Toronto Maple Leafs, Detroit Red Wings, New York Rangers, and Montreal Canadiens, they are listed among some of the oldest NHL teams around and the first team to originate from the United States.

Willie O’Ree

Willie O’Ree was the first African-American player to ever play in the NHL. Even though he could barely see from one eye, he went on to play in 45 games for the Boston Bruins, scoring four goals and assisting in 10.

Jim’s Favorite Team

The Office and Boston Bruins fans would be excited to know that the renowned actor and director John Krasinski is a fan of the team. John Krasinski is most famous for his role as Jim Halpert in the hit NBC sitcom The Office.

Some other notable celebrity fans include Ben Affleck, Mindy Kaling, and Dennis Leary. The latter even has a big collection of memorabilia and his ice hockey rink!

About The Money

According to Forbes, the Boston Bruins are the fifth most valuable National Hockey League teams of all time. The team is currently estimated to be worth around three hundred forty-eight million US dollars! That is a lot of money!

Hit ‘Em with a Shoe

In 1979, a fight broke out between the Bruins player Stan Jonathan and a fan when he tried to steal the player’s hockey stick from behind the wall. The brawl ended with the fan getting beaten over his head with his shoe by Stan!

Team Colors

The team came into being due to the efforts of Charles Adams, who was also the owner of The First National (Finast) chain of grocery stores in the United States. The chain used brown and yellow colors for its branding, which were later adopted by the Bruins as their official team colors.

Hated Owner

Did you know that the long-time owner of the Boston Bruins, Jeremy Jacobs, is not liked by fans of the team? Despite making a lot of money, he has been accused by fans of not spending enough on the team. The Bruins did not win a single Stanley Cup in nearly four decades under his ownership until they defeated Vancouver Canucks back in 2011.
