What To Do With Nail Yakupov?

from Craig Custance of ESPN,

One of the most interesting decisions Edmonton Oilers GM Craig MacTavish will have to make this offseason is what to do with Nail Yakupov, who Yakupov scored again on Wednesday and added an assist, turning March into his most productive month of the season.

He appears to be earning the trust of coach Todd Nelson with his ice time this month at a season-high 18:02 per game. He also has seven points in eight games.

Yakupov is a restricted free agent after this season, and at some point MacTavish is going to have to spin off one of his forwards for more help on defense, especially if the Oilers somehow land one of the top two picks in the draft. But is now the time to sell on Yakupov, before he really starts tapping into his talent? It'll be fascinating to see how this plays out.

read on for Burnside and LeBrun on the Ducks, Powers on the Blackhawks and Strang on the salary cap...

Yep, Edmonton wants a #7 defenseman with a high (for a 7th defenseman) salary for a guy who could very well be a 60-70 point player and 30-goal scorer.

Kindl maybe a 7th D-man in Detroit, because of the depth that Wings have but he is not a 7th D-man.
He could easily be 2nd pair guy on a team like Edmonton and play really well.

But yes, for a talent like Yakupov Kindl won’t get it done.

That’s pretty funny right there.

The only guy on Edmonton’s roster that Kindl would be an upgrade over is Keith Aulie, and he doesn’t even crack the lineup regularly.

Not to mention that the Oilers have Darnell Nurse in the pipeline too.

Kindl is maybe a third pair defenseman on a not-very-good team.  He’s not a 2nd pair guy in the NHL.

That’s a bit of an over-statement I think. Kind isn’t that bad. He can be 2nd pair on a as you say “not-very-good-team”

I guess we’ll have to agree to disagree.

It’s not about how bad he is, it’s about how good he is.

I’ll amend my comment somewhat: he could be a third pairing guy on any team.

If you want Kindl to be on your second pair and you want your second pair to be good though, you’re going to have to put in a lot of work.  As-is, Kindl is not a top four defenseman, in my opinion.

Kindl could be a third pairing PP specialist and do a decent job of it on the right team, I think.
