Video- The Scrum At The End Of The Pens/Islanders Game

Some talk late last night and this morning about this scrum  at the end of the game.  It's playoff hockey, nothing out of the ordinary about this.

Evgeni Malkin and Travis Hamonic did receive 5 for fighting, but I don't see anything that would deserve further discipline, but that is just my opinion.

Watch the video at the 9 second mark. Letang truns looks stright at the lines man and weakly crosschecks him. Doubt the NHL will do anything about it

the only one who might deserve attention is Ignila for adding on to a guy who was already vulnerable.  But, if you are going to give Weber a pass for what he did last year ... c’mon.

NHL fan, Elliotte Friedman just tweeted this…

On Letang: there is no game misconduct for “abuse of officials” listed on the scoresheet. That’s usually the tell for any further penalty

Frustrated little b*tches.
Look up at the scoreboard and take your frustration out on your sieve of a netminder.

Pretty standard stuff from Malkin at the end of a game he’s losing… wink

right? and the second Hamonic got loose and an actual fight was breaking out between him and Malkin, of course a third, fourth, and fifth man from the Penguins came in since Malkin can facewash like a pro but then is unwilling to put his money where his mouth is. I wish that first punch had connected solidly and knocked him out. That’s really what it would take for him to not be a dirty baby at the end of a loss.

Of course Hamonic would be suspended seeing that discipline in the playoffs quite obviously favors stars.

Was Malkin skating off the ice holding the hand he was using to throw sucker punches there at the end? Also, with a face-off with 9.9 seconds left, why does Bylsma even have his best players on the ice at that point. It’s a face-off not even in the offensive zone (if I remember it right). and you aren’t going to get 2 goals in that quick of a time. Seriously, I know Pens fans have been bashing him as a coach for a while now and I didn’t get it. Last night might be the first time I could actually see what they are talking about.

And Malkin didn’t throw punches until Hamonic was all tied up with those other players and the linesman.

phillyd, I thought Malkin was holding his hand too when skating off but don’t believe thre was any injury report post-game, but then again they could be hiding the injury.

Letang should definitely be disciplined, I remember Mike Peca when he was with the BlueJackets got 5 games for grabbing at a ref’s arm as he was skating away. Letang looked at, and then crosschecked a linesman.

Here’s a better look.

Typical behavior from Malkin. He’s a sorry sack of crap on skates. I can’t imagine Pens fans excusing his behavior if he were to have been wearing Flyers orange and black and the Pens were receiving his sucker punches.

Letang’s jab has to get a look. Really pathetic if it doesn’t. No matter how annoying refs and linesmen can be, they are untouchable. That was no accident. He was looking right at him.

Of course nothing will happen to Gary’s favorite team.

Malkin throwing punches at the end of a game like the POS he is?

Where have I heard that ditty before?

What a child… punching a dude under the pile who can’t defend himself… he really should be an Anaheim Duck.  That’s class.  If you have a beef with a dude wait until the next game and drop the gloves like a sportsman.  This is a major reason Sid and Geno come in for the extra hate they get.  Rarely do they challenge people to face to face, they either start shit and skate behind Engelland or the like, or they take cheap shots when the other guy isn’t looking.

So Abdelkader gets a 5 minute major and 2 games for an open ice hit, and no doubt Malkin won’t get anything for after the game had been ended he roughs up the Islanders player, once he pushes him to the point of fighting back the rest of the team holds him down while Malkin punches him a good 10-15 times pretty much unrestricted.

If there is no additional penalties/suspensions I want Shanahan to put out a video explaining why.  Yeah, like that’ll happen.

My opinion, Iginla should get a game for boarding a guy after the game ended. Letang should get a game for pushing the ref.

The rest is just a scrum. Malkin is a bit of a bitch in situations like this but so are a lot of players in these dumb after-game scrums.

But let’s recap. Niedermayer didn’t get a suspension for elbowing Datsyuk in the head a few playoffs ago (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0huvKzStF8M), and Weber didn’t get one for bashing Zetterberg’s head into the glass last year. So I don’t see how anyone gets any punishment for this. Unless it was Abdelkader I guess.

Ha! Malkin gets a tap on the chin and all four other pens on the ice skate right to his aid.

Iginla let up on him.  He was probably going to fall down anyway and Iggy tried to put on the brakes.  Of course, a lesser douchebag would’ve just not hit him but, hey, baby steps and all that.

I kinda like that Crosby got in there (facemask and all) and tried to grab someone and just tie them up.  I think maybe at this point I’m just in denial trying to see positives where there aren’t any.

You know what the worst part of this and the montreal shenanigans is?  You better believe Boudreau and the goonsquad in Anaheim know what they can get away with now.

Posted by shanetx from Floydada, Texas on 05/08/13 at 01:17 PM ET

I said it in another thread. Iginla should get a game for hitting a guy who was already going down after the buzzer.  That’s not hockey it’s cheap unsportsmanlike bull shit. Period. It had no place on the ice. And I would say that about anyone.

Posted by teldar on 05/08/13 at 01:17 PM ET

Puckdouchey, Deadspin, CBS Sports, and Sporting News all have stories and video of Letang cross checking the linesman.

Hockey News, ESPN, and NHL.com are silent.

The NHL is in a tough spot on this one. If it does nothing, then it’s playing favorites with the Pens and it’s open season on officials. If they do suspend him, what kind of sport is this where a finalist for one of the most revered indivual trophies attacks an official and gets suspended?

Likelihood of suspension? Zilch.

Anybody have shanny’s email address?

Posted by CaptainDennisPolonich from La La Land on 05/08/13 at 01:44 PM ET

And it goes without saying that if it was a Red Wing, or a player from any other team not named Penguins, it would be a suspension.

It’s just sickening. Rosby misses half the season, had not even been on the ice for even a minute in months and he’s the SI cover boi? I get the Wings are a 7th seed, but what about the Hawks? What about the Sharks dismantling the Losers from Vancouver? Hell, what about the MON/OTT series with controversial hits and brawls. There were any number of stories in the NHL over the past week (inlcuding the Pens that actually played against the Islanders) that deserved the cover more than that spoiled primadonna.

if they didn’t penalize for THIS http://www.cbssports.com/nhl/blog/eye-on-hockey/21621031/video-jannik-hansen-crosschecks-ref-wont-be-disciplined

then they won’t penalize for what Letang did

how in the hell does a guy get away with shoving the ref THAT HARD?!

The league left it up to the on-ice officials. Hmmm… The NHL really does have te dumbest officials in sports. Do you think the MLB, NFL or NBA officials would tolerate that? Hell no, and they’d go on a wildcat strike if their respective leagues failed to suspend the offending player. I have even less respect for NHL officials after reading that. You reap what you sow morons.
