The first home game the NYI played on Oct 13, 2001 (first NHL game in NY after the 9-11 attack) was against the Red Wings.

I was in attendance.

Chris Osgood’s first game with the Isles.  I think it was game 1 of our ‘renaissance’ with Peter Laviolette and Yashin/Peca.  The crowd was pumped for hockey - but - the game ( I know Detriot won either in OT or on a late goal - which was kind of a buzz kill for us) was secondary to the pre-game event.  I just tried to find a video of it - but could not.  If someone can post it - that would be good - to show younger people what it was like.

I was about 1/4 mile from the Towers when it happened.  TV could never describe the smell of that day ( like 50 mouldy basements concentrated) and to see personal photos and stock certificates land on your office balcony.

My recollection in the stands was one of excitement over the hockey season - both because we thought the Isles would not STINK for once - and also - begging for a distraction.

There was a huge flag unfurled with First Responders, the Isles, The Red Wings and fans partaking in the ceremony.  I don’t think it could ever match with the Mets/Braves game with the Piazza home run which is legend now.  But show your kids that video - as the Wings were there and it might tell a story.

Unfortunately, Kas, awood40 only has the OT winner by Yzerman.  He doesn’t show the pre-game ceremonies.  That’s what I could find on Youtube.

Well, we’re really glad you’re still with us, Kas.

Poignant story, Kasz. Thanks for sharing.

A hat tip to all first responders, both then and now.

I would be keen to see a replay of that pre-game (and the game too for old times sake)
