The New York Islanders May Be Trying To Move Travis Hamonic

from Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet,

Very quietly, the New York Islanders are trying a manoeuvre a difficult situation — the possibility of trading Travis Hamonic.

Hamonic, a talented 25-year-old defender who does tremendous things off the ice, is in play, although the exact reasons are private.

One rumour indicated it was because he was unhappy with the unusual Long Island–Brooklyn setup for the team’s players, but a few sources blew that rationale out of the water.

“Nothing to do with it,” one said.

“This was a possibility before games began this season,” said another.

Islanders general manager Garth Snow and Hamonic’s agent, Kevin Epp, declined comment. Hamonic himself could not be reached.

There’s a ton to like about this player. He’s a right-hand shot, top-pairing defenceman with four years remaining on a good-value contract.

via Darren Dreger tweets,

Credit to @FriedgeHNIC on Hamonic story.  He has family concerns in West Canada and requested a move before the season…

Hamonic loves the Isles. This is personal.  Wpg, Edmtn, Cgy and Van all preferred. Might expand to other west cities. Tough on Isles….

Garth Snow wants an equitable player in return. Given status of Hamonic tough deal to make.

I was just watching an Isles game the other day, and thought, ‘hmmmm, Hamonic in the Winged Wheel ...’

But that would be intelligent.

Don’t want him, but just for the heck of it, Kronwall straight up.

Pierre LeBrun of ESPN,

Isles general manager Garth Snow declined comment when I reached out to him Wednesday. But you better believe, while I’m sure he’s sensitive to Hamonic’s situation, he also needs to get proper value for a 25-year-old top-four blueliner signed through the 2019-20 season on a reasonable contract.

“He is not giving him away,” said one Western Conference team executive referring to the Isles GM.

This is a tough situation for all involved. The Isles are in win-now mode. If they make this deal, they need a comparable top-four defenseman back in return, or at least get back assets they can use in a deal to get that, I guess.

If you’re the Winnipeg Jets—the closest club to Hamonic’s St. Malo, Manitoba, roots—no doubt you have to inquire.

My question is this: If you’re Winnipeg, do you even think of dangling pending unrestricted free agent blueliner Dustin Byfuglien, who remains unsigned? Ideally the Jets would rather re-sign Byfuglien, of course, but will they be able to?

If TSN reports that he wants to go to Western Canada to be near his family in Manitoba, Detroit is almost 850 miles southeast of Winnipeg. That’s not something that’s going to happen.
