San Jose Sharks May Have To Fire Todd McLellan

from Adam Proteau of The Hockey News,

The San Jose Sharks lost their fourth straight game Wednesday – this one, a feeble 2-0 defeat at home to the Flames – which meant the heat on San Jose head coach Todd McLellan is only going to increase. And with the franchise falling back in the pack in the Western Conference (their 10-10-4 record has them fifth in the Pacific Division and 10th in the West), McLellan’s six-year tenure behind the Sharks bench could be at an end.

San Jose’s players had already spoken out in support of McLellan prior to Wednesday’s loss, yet in spite of that and Sharks GM Doug Wilson’s well-earned reputation as a man who doesn’t make rash decisions, he may have little choice but to fire his coach and continue the process of remaking this team in a newer, more playoff-productive mold. McLellan is a highly-respected coach whose services likely would be snapped up in short order, but his current team has dropped seven of its past nine games and its most recent five losses haven’t come at the hands of a murderer’s row of opponents (Columbus, Buffalo, Florida, Arizona and the Flames).

Wheels turning now: trade Babcock to Toronto for their next three 1st rounders, and hire Mclellan.

Adam Proteau   “against the powerhouse Ducks, Flyers and Bruins”
Lost all respect for the guy when he calls Flyers a powerhouse. It has been a long time since Flyers were a powerhouse. Flames are a better team than Flyers.

Having faced the wrath of Sharks fans for years, I couldn’t be happier to see them in this position.  Todd deserves a better team anyway.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, he lost the room during last year’s playoff series against the Kings and never got it back. His firing is inevitable.

And what was Jose thinking when they did nothing but let Boyle go, acquire John Scott(?), move Burns back to D and play musical chairs with the captaincy? What did they realistically expect?

Plus, I don’t think McLellan is that great of a coach. He’s had some excellent teams that have found interesting ways to lose when it counted the most. And when he says things like “We were cheated…” and “They had all the puck luck”, that doesn’t strike me as something good coaches say. Good coaches take responsibility for the teams, not blame imaginary outside forces.
