Montreal Acquires Steve Mason From Winnipeg

MONTREAL - The Canadiens acquired forward Joel Armia, goaltender Steve Mason, a seventh-round selection in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft and a fourth-round pick in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft from the Winnipeg Jets on Saturday, in exchange for defenseman Simon Bourque.

Armia is coming off his most productive season points-wise in the NHL ranks, setting single-season highs in all three major offensive categories with 12 goals, 17 assists and 29 points in 79 games.

He also appeared in 13 playoff games for the Jets during their run to the Western Conference Finals, chipping in with a pair of goals.

Erm… Mason, that is… That’s the second time I’ve mixed those two up already today. More caffeine!

The importance of moving decisively to shed salary and open cap space
seems to only be increasingly. Even with a higher cap ceiling.

Notice the trend of GMs declining to even qualify some players
they want back. All about cutting costs and avoiding arbitration.

Winnipeg hedged their bets with Mason. It didn’t work out
really at all. And they need cap space to focus on the players
who will get them over the top.

Armia had a pretty good year. But the Jets have got tons of young
forwards and not enough space for all of them. Its still a bit
startling to see a team trade a solid young forward and picks just
to move salary. Only one year and not an enormous cap hit.
But still, Mason’s cap hit had to go.

It’s all about depth. Depths wins you games in the reg season and in the playoffs. Depth also lets you trade away a good forward, because you’ve got plenty and can’t pay them all anyway.
