It’s That Time Of Year, Willie Desjardins Gone In Vancouver

added 12:54pm,

VANCOUVER, B.C., - Vancouver Canucks General Manager Jim Benning announced today that Willie Desjardins was relieved of his duties as head coach, along with assistant coaches Doug Lidster and Perry Pearn.

"We made a very difficult decision to relieve Willie Desjardins of his duties as head coach today," said Benning. "It's been a challenging season and we all share responsibility for the results however, we felt this change was necessary as we continue to develop a young team and look ahead to the future. We're grateful to Willie, Doug, Perry and each of their families for their dedication and hard work and wish them every success."

This one is bush league. Exactly what is he supposed to be with Bo Horvat, declining Sedins, old Ryan Miller, bachman, and Markstrom as the goalies?

P- I guess you could add Tom Rowe into that mix too.

Bo Horvat being the only good thing about that list of players, just for clarification.

Jets fans so jealous right now…not of playoff teams, of other non-playoff teams firing their coaches.

My understanding is that while VAN wasn’t supposed to necessarily be a playoff team, they also weren’t supposed to be *this* bad.  There’s a lot less parity in the West, and even then the Canucks were stll awfully bad.

As a point of reference, the Canucks were still 10 points worse than DET, 10 worse than Dallas who will be getting a new head coach, and even 1 point worse than the hot mess that is the Coyotes.

I really feel like Dallas and Detroit are set up with much better futures than the Nucks are…

This was his 2nd year, right? They regressed a whole 6 points. Then again, they had 100+ points just a couple years ago. I welcome any fact checking.

Assuming my analysis is correct, Detroit had a 14 point set back this year with numerous players regressing (Sheahan, still hate that Nyquist scored 12 goals, Larkin, etc.)

I’d be surprised.  I think Bednar gets another year.  It’s only been one year with him I think, and Colorado’s roster is a total mess.

I think Hakstol should join that group, but I think Hextall will take the fall before he goes.

Kevin Cheveldayoff tells the media they are in very early process for contract extension with Paul Maurice and he has full confidence in the coach.

Re Maurice - I don’t get it, even if they want to go the loyalty route and stick with the coach, why bother with the extension? Isn’t there any middle ground anymore?

If the Jets aren’t in the playoffs next season, there’s no way they can keep him.

This really is and seemingly always will be the easy way out for organizations.

One hears enough stories about meddling ownership and poor executive and management choices at the top, that there has to be something to it.

For at least the last couple of seasons, Vancouver has struck me as the franchise most
in denial about what it has and where it’s going. Honestly they made me feel like Detroit had company in terms of delusions at the top and sort of being stuck between trying to add veterans to win now, and a half-hearted rebuild. The Louie Ericsson signing is a good example.

At some point this season, they seemed to finally accept they weren’t going anywhere.

But, directionally, too little to late.

If the Wings really wanted to win now, bringing in a veteran coach to light a fire earlier might have…well, gotten them closer to 18th or something. It’s both hard to evaluate Blashill given some of the huge holes on the roster, and frustrating to see some of his seeming missteps. For us, trying to finish between 16th-20th shouldn’t matter so much, in and of itself, as long as the younger players are developed properly. Winning can help that, but it shouldn’t be pursued at the expense of the longer term.

I’m not sure how much many long-term overpayments for veterans or familiar players help “the culture”. Cap space can be an asset. And the Vanek signing is a good example of seeing a signing as an asset: If he doesn’t help, OK, one season. If he helps, good, turn in into a pick.
