Thanks, Boss.

One of the comments under the Ovie 5-year deal went like this:

Something happened to my post.

A tweet read:  “As a non capitals fan.  This deal is great for the rest of the league.  This assure the Caps are a non contender for 5 years.”

I chuckled.

That Ovie deal just made me think of the shift from stars who would take less to benefit the team, to stars who would take what they could to benefit themselves.  I believe it started with Toews and Kane, and it’s been the flavor of the month for many teams and stars since then.

Ovie could have taken a shorter term or less money and allowed the Caps more money to splash around on supporting talent, but instead he’ll get paid and not win a Cup again.

7 years @$5.5m per for Hyman in EDM, modified NMC for the last two.

The ovi deal makes more sense to me than Hyman.  Ovi sells tickets and he’s still got gas in the tank.  Worst case at three years he gets a rash and retires.

I think your are right, SFT. His quest for reaching the goal record will keep a lot of Caps fans interested even when the team is no longer a contender.

By the way, thank you for the Twitter aggregation, PK. Very helpful for those of us who can’t watch TV at the moment.

The Danault and Jones contracts are going to haunt the teams that signed them.
Hyman might be worth it if they win a Cup, and definitely worth it for 2 Cups, otherwise that’s a huge albatross too.

Now what is Boston going to do for goaltending. Are they determined to stick with youth until Rask is ready?
