LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles Kings have acquired goaltender Ben Bishop and a fifth-round pick in the 2017 NHL Draft from the Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for goaltender Peter Budaj, defenseman Erik Cernak, a seventh-round pick in the 2017 NHL Draft and a conditional pick in the 2017 NHL Draft, Kings President/General Manager Dean Lombardi announced today.
Bishop, 30 (born Nov. 21, 1986), has played in 32 games with the Lightning this year, posting a 16-12-3 record, a 2.55 goals-against average, a .911 save percentage and one shutout.
The 6-7, 216-pound native of Denver, Colo. has played for the Lightning, Ottawa Senators and St. Louis Blues during his eight-year NHL career. In 263 career regular-season games he has posted a 146-77-23 record, a 2.32 goals-against average, a .919 save percentage and 19 shutouts.
Drafted in the third-round (85th overall) by the St. Louis Blues during the 2005 NHL Entry Draft, he has appeared in 36 playoff games, holding a 21-13 record with a 2.09 goals-against average, a.927 save percentage and five shutouts. During the 2015 playoffs, he helped lead the Lightning to an Eastern Conference Championship before falling in six game to the Chicago Blackhawks in the Stanley Cup Finals.
Budaj, 34, appeared in 53 games this season with the Kings, posting a 27-20-3 record with a 2.12 goals-against average (third in the NHL), a .917 save percentage and seven shutouts (tied for the league-lead).
Cernak, 19, has appeared in 40 games this season with the Erie Otters (OHL), where he has recorded 17 points (3-14=17), a plus-27 rating and 47 penalty minutes.

Tampa Bay retains 20 percent of Bishop salary/cap hit

Yzerman sure didn’t get much for him. TB and LA basically traded some expiring contracts. It’s almost an NBA trade.

Did Yzerman just get schooled? Cernak is by all accounts a middling, all be it huge, defenseman yet he seems to be the only payout for Tampa in this deal. Unclear what the conditional pick is or how easy it is to obtain.
Cernak also seems to be a little bit of a problem child, as he held out against his assignment to the Otters for a short time.
Anyone with any incite into this guy?

Not sure about this trade at all. Kings need scoring, not goaltending. Guess I gotta wait for Lombardi’s long-winded explanation.

This trade doesn’t really make any sense to me for either team. Would love to get some in depth Bob McKenzie or Friedman analysis on this one.

Maybe this is a part of some bigger deals to come for both teams.

Right, the only context where this makes sense to me is if there are one or two moves left (and yet Bishop isn’t repackaged). And frankly, I don’t know about making a lot of moves, given the mediocrity of the team, but hey, anything can happen cough cough 2012.

I see Tampa getting a cap space win, but where is LA going with this? Budaj has better numbers this season, they won’t sign Bishop after the season… yeah, there must be another domino yet to fall here.

Cernak will be an NHL defenseman and at leadt be a big physical dman. He is right handed and has some skill as well, these are the types if prospects that may be unheralded but could be huge upside. I guess I think this is a solid trade for Tampa, its the Kings who were fleeced

I have to guess maybe the confidence level in Quick’s health is not that great, they want to make a run for the wildcard, and are looking for a sure-fire insurance against the expansion draft.
