Lonely at the Top

03/31/2011 at 5:12pm EDT

From NHL.com:

There are 11 spots yet to be decided for the annual playoff derby, but what’s most noteworthy is that in the West a grand total of one—yes, one—berth has been clinched.

One has to wonder if Vancouver feels lonely.

The Canucks have been running away with the West’s best record for most of the season, and have already clinched the conference’s top seed, but not only does Vancouver have no idea who it will play in the first round, it has no idea who anyone else in the field is going to be.

Other Canucks news…

—For tonight, Mason Raymond is apparently centering the 3rd line.

—Canucks find yet another way to make money.

—And Anson Carter has some (not-unreasonable, imo) props for Anson Carter, and his days with the Sedins:

In the end, it was a one-year relationship and Carter now seems like the hockey equivalent of Pete Best, the Beatles’ original drummer who left the band just before they made it big. But Carter also saw something that season and even if he couldn’t project what the twins would become — largely because no one could — he still takes some pride in their development.

“You can’t beat the chemistry,” he says. “Think about it. They’ve been playing together all their lives. You’re lucky if you get a linemate you play with for a couple of years. They’re two people who think like one. You can’t teach that.

“I told them, ‘Don’t worry about me. You guys play your game. It’s up to me to figure out how I’ll fit in.’ The one thing I said was I’m not interested in spending the whole shift cycling. You get 10, 15 seconds, then you have to take it to the net.”

It sounds simple enough. It just took them a while to figure it out.

As for the player who is currently playing the role of Anson Carter… here’s hoping Alex Burrows keeps up the good work.

P.S. It’s not lonely at the top. It’s awesome.
