Wings Were Overwhelmed

03/07/2024 at 3:13am EST

from Ted Kulfan of the Detroit News,

"We just gave them too many easy chances, we weren't connected enough in our neutral zone," defenseman Moritz Seider said. "They just skated up the ice and overwhelmed us with a lot of speed. Too many penalties, including myself (two delay of game penalties) and that's going to hurt you.

"We just didn't stay in the fight."

Robby Fabbri (power play, 16th goal) and David Perron (13th goal) had first-period goals, but the Wings weren't able to generate much else in their first game without captain Dylan Larkin (lower body)....

"Certainly a tough one," coach Derek Lalonde said. "We had a chance to come out of the second period with a little better outcome. We hit a crossbar that could have made it 3-3 and the game would have looked a lot different.

"I just didn't like how we gave their top guys two easy ones (goals) in the second period because they were obviously buzzing tonight. That second period got out of hand.

"We got overmatched and overwhelmed a little bit. We let their big guns have too easy of a night."...

Suddenly, Friday's game at lowly Arizona appears to be a must-win for the Wings, who need to stem this losing streak while teams around them steadily earn points.

"We have to win," Lalonde said. "There's no shame losing to Florida (4-0 Saturday) and this team but back-to-back and now you're looking at three straight losses. Bottom line, if we want to stay in the battle we have to stop the bleeding."

they need help on D, its been clear forever. SY needs to catch someone sleeping. get rid of Holl for whatever you can get (bad deal the day it was signed, and trading for Petry was maybe even worse), bring up Ed (not sure if they can slide his contract again), and get these goalies some help.

nights like this just expose how badly this team needs D help. cant even say if chychrun makes sense, dont follow him enough, but he seems to be holding his own on a bad OTT team. make it happen! berggren seems to want out, sounds like a good piece to include if you ask me.

Colorado is a top 3-5 cup contender, the team that does not lose at home. I hope SY does not overreact to this.

Personally, I am with the view and posts here. If Holl can be moved and then add Berggren (if he does not want to stay) for a package.

I am not sure who the Wings can add in terms of Defense. Personally, I would rather see our own from the Griffins. However, do the Wings want Edvinsson and Albert J to gain PO experience at the AHL level?

We are about to see how important making the playoffs this year is to Yzerman.

Moving Holl would make the most sense as it not only opens a spot for Edvinsson but might also allow them room to resign Ghost. They can't expect much in return beyond that and to unload Holl it would likely take a sweetener.

Yzerman could still surprise and move one of the UFAs. It would be better to get NHL ready players/prospects than more draft picks at this point.

Wings got outskated and outworked all night. If it wasn't for Lyon standing on his head it could have been much worse.

Its a different team without Larkin. They really need another good center.

Avs have 3 of the very best players in the league- when I went to bed Mac, Makar and Rantanan all had 4 points. We do not have a single player even close to those guys in talent. They drafted high and they drafted well.

Not only were the Wings overwhelmed, they were not prepared in the least for the Avalanche that rolled right through their team. Everyone should have known about the speedy pace of the opposition. It makes me wonder if anyone studied, or, even had ever watched anything regarding how fast the Avs are. I was amazed at the absolute speed of this team when they won the Cup. Its obvious the Wings havent been paying attention.

I'm glad Mo owned up to that. He looked frazzled out there. It was one of his worst games this year. But the odds are he'll learn from it and move on.

Petry and Maata were way outmatched. Only Walman and (shockingly) Gostisbehere were adequate last night. And let's hope the "Veleno as the #1 center" experiment is over. Give Ras a shot at it. If he can't handle it, then they have to move Compher up to play with Kane and DeBrincat. The Wings can't afford to waste the ice time of those two.
