Will At Least One Team Please Stand Up

03/31/2024 at 4:33am EDT

from Bob Duff of Detroit Hockey Now,

At some point soon, the Detroit Red Wings are going to run out of moral victories to give. Amazingly, that time still hasn’t arrived. And Detroit has no one to thank for that fact other than just about every other squad involved in this pathetic race for the final Eastern Conference wild card place.

If you ever pondered what the fable of the tortoise and the hare would look like if only tortoises were entered in the race, well, wonder no more. This chase is exactly that.

There is no frontrunner. Just a gathering of stragglers, dawdlers slowly lumbering their way to the finish line....

That’s because the Philadelphia Flyers were 5-7-3 over the past month, while the New Jersey Devils went 6-9. The New York Islanders are 2-7-1 through their past 10 games and the Buffalo Sabres are 2-4 over the past six.

Only the Washington Capitals, 6-2-1 through the past nine games, are making a move. And that move on Saturday was to surpass the Flyers for third spot in the Metropolitan Division. It’s entirely possible that we may have seen the last of the Caps in the wild card race.

Let’s look to the week ahead as the Red Wings continue their chase for a playoff spot.

16 points still on the table. if they let Philly beat them out i say blow everything up, top to bottom.

also, and not talking about yzerman himself, but when are clubs going to stop putting alums in management positions? theres no way some of the blockheads around the 90s should be in these positions if a team wants to succeed, but you see it all the time. come ON.

So skipping Yzerman and Nill (for obvious reasons) and taking it to mean GM's--not simply some scout--here's your list:

  • Anaheim Ducks Pat Verbeek hired February 3, 2022 pro career 1982--2002
  • Arizona Coyotes Bill Armstrong hired September 17, 2020 pro career 1990--1999
  • Boston Bruins Don Sweeney hired May 20, 2015 pro career 1988--2004
  • Buffalo Sabres Kevyn Adams hired June 16, 2020 pro career 1996--2008
  • Calgary Flames Craig Conroy May 23, 2023 pro career 1995--2011
  • Carolina Hurricanes Don Waddell May 8, 2018 pro career 1980--1988
  • Columbus Blue Jackets John Davidson (Interim) February 15, 2024 pro career 1973--1983
  • Dallas Stars Jim Nill April 29, 2013 pro career 1980--1991
  • Edmonton Oilers Ken Holland May 7, 2019 pro career 1976--1985
  • Los Angeles Kings Rob Blake April 10, 2017 pro career 1990--2010
  • Minnesota Wild Bill Guerin August 21, 2019 pro career 1991--2010
  • New Jersey Devils Tom Fitzgerald January 12, 2020 pro career 1988--2006
  • Ottawa Senators Steve Staios November 1, 2023 pro career 1993--2012
  • Philadelphia Flyers Daniel Briere March 10, 2023 pro career 1997--2015
  • San Jose Sharks Mike Grier July 5, 2022 pro career 1996--2011
  • Seattle Kraken Ron Francis July 18, 2019 pro career 1981--2004
  • Toronto Maple Leafs Brad Treliving May 31, 2023 pro career 1990--1995
  • Vancouver Canucks Patrik Allvin January 26, 2022 pro career 1993--2002
  • Washington Capitals Brian MacLellan May 26, 2014 pro career 1982--1992
  • Winnipeg Jets Kevin Cheveldayoff June 8, 2011 pro career 1990--1994

Lets further eliminate Don Sweeney, Don Waddell and Holland (didn't make it to the 90's), and Ron Francis as they've proven to be pretty effective for a period of time. Notice effective--not necessarily good.

Who do you mean?

There are the Elites, the Pretty Darn Goods, and the Peloton of Suck where teams are trying to play themselves out of the playoffs.

Detroit, a shocking 8 points in 15 games, still with a reasonable chance to make the playoffs.

"Detroit, a shocking 8 points in 15 games, still with a reasonable chance to make the playoffs."

And that tells you just how fooked up things are in the East. No cheese grabbing going on here.

Which team will finish in the last wild card position to get annihilated in the first round? 😨

dcabigfrog

Depends upon the match-ups.

For example Detroit matches up well against Boston, but wouldn't have a chance against Florida or the Rangers.

Wash has different favorablities: they match-up well against the Rangers, Carolina, and have kinda held their own against Boston, but lose to Florida.

The Flyers hold their own against Boston and Florida, but lose to the Rangers and Carolina.

The Islanders match-up well against Florida, but so far they lose to Carolina, the Rangers (they've only played 2 games so far and both were away games) and Boston.
