Quick Recap- Detroit/Buffalo

No scoring in the third, Wings win 3-1.

Team Stats

Detroit goals are below.

Walman should sit for the remaining games.

We need someone better the Veleno for our 4th line center, we need a real physical checking line or bigger bodies that can score and are still responsible defensively. 4th line barely played today again

bigfrog

After a quick start, another Rope a Dope win. Cannot keep playing that way.😜

damndogrevenge

It's a win. Let's move to the next game.

Random question: Do we have any idea how close to healthy Husso is? Hoping we don't need him, but if Lyon falters or needs a game off, I'd rather not rely much on Reimer. He can stand on his head and steal games, but not for stretches.

Ansar Khan of Mlive yesterday,

Lalonde indicated Ville Husso soon will join Grand Rapids for a conditioning stint.

Its been the point all along when he felt he was ready to get some practice time and get a conditioning stint down there and were getting close to that, Lalonde said.

They won against a team they struggle to win against, and effectively killed Buffalo's playoff chances in the process.

This was a game where the Wings really needed to get two points, and should be entirely capable of, but have crapped the bed so many times. Lucky for them, half the eastern conference is also crapping in the bed..

They win again with horrible statistics.  They have been doing that this year though.  84-47 CF (BUF), 39-24 SOGs (BUF), 45-18 SCF (BUF), only 13-9 HDCF (BUF), and the 3rd period alone looked like 37-15 CF (BUF), 18-7 SOGs (BUF), 22-5 SCF (BUF), and 5-2 HDCF (BUF).

Their D-zone management is abysmal.  How many RWs need to touch the puck before it exits their zone?  I noted several dozen times when 3 or more RWs touched the puck without the puck exiting our zone.  Thanks to Lyon we won.  As we've seen, Lyon can steal a game but he can't steal all of them.

Edvinsson looks good though. Maybe another D-man from GR would help. Seider and Chariot are the worst giving up chances so I don't know what our coaching staff is doing.

No salary cap in the playoffs, so a kid from GR could come up, esp if there are injuries.

Havent seen this before.  Aftermath of the Showtime OT goal in Chicago, as seen from the Red Wings bench.

Its stuff like this (and other things Ive seen like this), that makes me think hed like to resign here. He seems to be having a lot of fun with these guys and at his stage of his career, that might be just enough for him to resign (given the money & term are right - we all know that). You wonder if he feels like this is bonus hockey time because hes doing what others couldnt do following similar surgeries.

calquakeRockyGibraltar

I'm not sure. Kane is going to want close to Larkin money and probably 3 years. He'll get it and more if he goes elsewhere. With having to sign both Mo and Cool Hand it will be a tight fit. May have to shed some salaries like Fabbri (4M) and/or Perron (4.75M) to make it work. Either way Stevie Y has his work cut out for him in the off season.

VPalmercalquake

I can't see Kane getting anything close to Larkin money on a 3 year deal. $5 mil is much more realistic on a 3 year deal. He might get $8 mil on a 1 year deal, but I do not think a good team can afford that and a bad team he will not want to play for.

Bill_Hcalquake

I doubt he'll get three years as that incurs the over 35 stuff that caused us problems with Datsyuk; buyouts, retirements, etc.

Articles... fans mention a lot about Lalonde as a coach. Is Dan Watson the guy? Really got GR up to speed rather quickly.

TreKronorRWHockey13

Keep in mind, gr was doing horribly until a couple months ago. They were towards the bottom.

As we saw with Blash, the savior isn't always coaching in gr...

VPalmerTreKronor

Was just going to say the same thing, we all already wanted a GR coach instead of Babcock at the time.

calquakeRWHockey13

Lalonde is good for another season or two unless the Wings regress. If they don't make the playoffs next year then all bets (excuse the pun) are off.

from Kevin Allen of Detroit Hockey Now,

To earn that win, the Red Wings needed 37 saves from goalie Alex Lyon, 27 blocked shots and two fights (by Joe Veleno and Jeff Petry). Moritz Seider had 10 blocked shots. The Red Wings had 28 hits and the Sabres boasted 27. This felt like a 1990s playoff game.

I thought we did a good job of locking it down, Lyon said. I think they had some opportunities, but I think for the most part we did a good job of getting it deep and making them go 200 feet. And thats what youve got to do when you have a lead, and play from the inside out and protect the house. I thought for the most part we were diligent with that.

Stronger Defensively

On Friday, the Red Wings gave up a late power play to the Rangers and lost. That didnt happen against the Sabres.

Theres some mental fortitude from the group, Lalonde said. But finding ways to close out games is difficult, especially against a team like that. Again, I think Alex was being a little humble there. I thought he was our best player in the third. That team had some looks, some really good looks that he kept out.

Holy smoke!  Wallstedt is playing for MIN already.  DET is saying Cossa will take some time before he gets to the NHL and Cossa had better stats than Wallstedt in the AHL this year.  Is he that far away?  Wallstedt did get shelled by DAL but threw a SO on CHI.  Hmmmm...

evileyeBill_H

Giving him another year in GR playing heavy minutes and let's see. I think the only way he enters the conversation in Detroit over the summer is if he has a dominant playoff in GR.

It takes some time for goalies to mature. No need to rush him just yet. As of right now the Wings already have two goalies under contract for next year (Lyon, Husso). Cossa would have to be playing 50% of the games in the NHL for it to be worthwhile.
