Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977. No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y. Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation. There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature. Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that.
I don't see the wings doing anything at this point. It would be strange to see nothing happen though, so will see.
Maybe I'm wrong but it just seems like most of the good trades have already happened this week.
1.) It already kinda seems like the big shoes have already dropped unless Im forgetting someone. Doesnt it?
2.) To me the Wings are playing with house money this season. The Yzerplan is still in germinal form and the team is about half free agent signings at the moment. I wont be surprised if Stevie does nothing, and I dont necessarily think he should. Any deal he makes needs to be thrifty.
Marty Biron of TSN thinks the Wings could use a goaltender. Scroll to the one minute mark at TSN.
I agree with Biron, but, I dont see it happening today. Then again, SY plays it so close to the vest maybe a D-man could be on the horizon.
Agree as well. The question is whos available that is markedly better. I think if you are going to take a big swing today its in the goaltending position.
The Daily Faceoff with their Top 50 players left.
Yeah, only Holl on there and he is at the bottom. That stinks, but I would try to move him at retained salary or try a package.
I would like to see them do something. A number of teams around the league got better. Thus, playing against any of them during the remainder of the season will be tougher for the Wings. And with Larkin out, it may be more challenging to bank wins and points. Unless this team comes out with aggressiveness and urgency each game how much will they gain in the standings.
I would move Holl and Berggren (if indeed he wants out). On another note, if Larkin is out and Berggren has been playing well, then bring up Berggren for at least 3-4 games. It cannot hurt.
Yzerman has a number of decisions to make in the off-season, especially with his own draft picks. Albert J and Simon E... for starters. Another year in the AHL will do nothing for them and will impact for the future of the NHL Wings roster. In other words, no new draft picks making the team is not a good sign of the future.
Bergren wants out (if he wants out) only because he is not playing in the NHL which obviously influences his future income, so he wants a role with the big club. I think Berg has a potential to be a 50-60 point player and I would be very hesitant to trade him without giving him a chance.
I think Berggren wanting out is completely fabricated. I would like to see where he said that or acted like that.
This is exactly like Jarnkrok that supposedly "wanted out" and "was going back to Sweden" and now it's become plain as day that was never the case and sounded like bs Holland had put out to force him out for who knows what reason.
Calle is a player we'd like to have had the entire time.
I think the question with Berggren has always been whether or not he can handle the physical side of playing in the NHL. To a degree, the same was said about Raymond -- until this year. But he did the work over the summer to bulk up without losing any speed.
Can Beggren do the same? The fact that he's been in GR all year indicates to me that the Wings are asking the same question.
If they're unsure, and Yzerman can get a generous offer, I'm guessing he'll take it.
What do you think, you've probably watched more games than anyone here. Does he go into a shell when hit and tries to avoid hits?
Actually, I only see the Griffs when they're carried on local TV. But from what I have seen is that he plays with a lot of energy. I just don't think his body is built up enough to be the type of player Raymond has become. And it's not really his style of play either. He "hits" like Ras and Veleno hit. They all just sort of "bump into" guys. Raymond, like DeBrincat, takes guys on who are much bigger than they are.
I've always liked Berggren, and I even thought after his first year in Detroit that he might score more goals than Raymond. And that may turn out to be the case. But I question whether or not his style of play fits the style of play that Yzerman and Lalonde are in the process of creating.
I agree. But the question looms, will he get that chance to play on the Red Wings roster?
After watching the Wings fold like a lawn chair the last couple games it seems less likely they get anywhere if they do make the playoffs. It might be best if Steve sells any players not under contract next year for picks and bring up players from GR and get them some NHL playoff experience which would be advantageous for future playoff runs.
I think that as well.
Yeah not much in the way of expecations today. Maybe move out an expiring contract or depth defensman to make room for a Berggren/Edvinsson.
The other challenge the Wings have right now is that GR is in a playoff spot as well. If youre moving prospects in a deal or even calling up guys if you move roster players, you impact GR and what theyve got going there.
This. The Griffs have a chance to win the championship, and the Wings do not. Any long run is better than one series.
Doing nothing is doing something in the Whyzerman realm.
So no expectations here.
LGRW !!!!!
Stevie has some difficult decisions to make. Do you keep the veteran defenders or trade em and call up the GR pair who may make typical rookie mistakes during a playoff run? Then you have the question of are the rookies better off staying for a possible longer playoff run in GR?
I see us just keeping what we have and taking some salary in a 3 way trade for draft picks.
The Red Wings get good goaltending when they actually give their goalie a chance with good forechecking and careful puck movement in the d-zone. No amount of goaltending is going to contain the end result of lazy dump outs around the boards and careless flips into the neutral zone that result in turnovers, no look d-zone passes, and icing the puck over and over.
With Cossa waiting in the wings, and what they have right now in Lyon and Reimer, giving something up for a goalie seems like a sideways move to me. The Wings need another center and to be a pain in the ass defensively.
I agree too. I also think Husso was playing well in both the games he got injured in before he went down. I feel like he could be good again if he gets healthy with enough time to get a few starts in before playoffs.
Alternatively if another team thinks the same, he could be a sneaky trade target for another team.

I found an interesting video on youtube. Its about Sprong.
He has to be on the AHL roster until 3pm to be eligible for the AHL playoffs.
Seems the top echelon teams that have a chance for a long playoff run are trying to add depth. Florida was already a favorite with a stingy defense.
With ten minutes to go, unless something magical happens will Stevie even bother to have a presser today? There's nothing to discuss.
