- The cities of Detroit and Toronto are separated by approx. 230 miles (370 km), with fans on both sides of the border routinely making the 4.5 hour drive to support the visiting team. The border linking Detroit with Windsor, ON, is the busiest among all Canada-U.S. border crossings.
- Many communities in southwestern Ontario (Windsor, Sarnia, Chatham) are closer to Detroit than Toronto and are home to fans of both teams. There also are divided loyalties in the largest city in the region –London, ON –which is the midpoint of the drive.
- The city of Hamilton, ON –40 miles southwest of Toronto –was home to the Red Wings-sponsored major junior team in the 1960s and 70s.
