Finding A Goalie For The Wngs

06/06/2023 at 5:05pm EDT

from Ansar Khan of Mlive,

The backup goaltending situation is the focus of the latest mailbag, with some suggestions more realistic than others:

Q:We know the Wings need a goaltender to pair with Husso. How about Jeremy Swayman, who is (24) and a restricted free agent. Would a second-round puck and Nedeljkovic work as a sign and trade for both sides? Ned is a UFA but might agree to the deal? – Tom

A: Swayman is arbitration-eligible and due for a big raise from his entry-level contract and $925,000 cap hit after an exceptional season as Linus Ullmark’s backup (24-6-4, 2.27 GAA, .920 save percentage). The Bruins are facing a huge cap crunch and have some difficult decisions.

It’s not a given they move Swayman, even if they determine they can’t keep both. Ullmark will likely win the Vezina Trophy, but he turns 30 on July 31 and has two years remaining at a $5 million cap hit. Maybe Boston will opt to move Ullmark (to a team seeking a No. 1 goalie) and keep the younger goalie with more years ahead of him.

from Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press,

DeBrincat's resume shows his scoring prowess: 41 goals each in 2018-19 and 2021-22; 32 goals in 50 games in 2020-21 (the pandemic-shortened season); at least 20 goals in five of six NHL seasons. He has 187 goals and 373 points in 450 games. He has 11 goals and 30 points in 23 career games against the Wings.

DeBrincat (5 feet 7, 165 pounds) is coming off a three-year, $19.2 million contract that carried a $6.4 million annual average value. His qualifying offer is set at $9 million. He is one year away from unrestricted free agency. Friedman states the Senators are "considering all options, everything from taking him to arbitration to a trade."

There is bound to be interest for the winger, given his offensive numbers. But perhaps the last trade scenario the Senators are likely to take is one that sends DeBrincat to another team in the Atlantic Division, which they share with the Wings. For them to sell their fans on sending a proven scorer to a rebuilding rival, the return would have to be astronomical. The Blackhawks jettisoned DeBrincat as part of a plan to reset their rebuild and lucked out in getting the No. 1 pick in the draft later this month but they found an offer they liked outside their conference.

DeBrincat's appeal, though, is multifold. He shoots right, as do Wings forwards Lucas Raymond and David Perron. Raymond, 21, projects to be a long-term part of the Wings' rebuild, while Perron, 35, is entering the last year of his contract, and, depending on where the Wings are at a next season's trade deadline, could be flipped for a pick.

from twrobinson of Detroit Hockey Now,

The Red Wings have two picks in the first round, their own at No. 9 overall, and the No. 17 pick they received as part of the Filip Hronek trade with Vancouver at the deadline last winter.

After a little research, you learn what the Wings already know there are some quality prospects available. We all know that the likelihood of Steve Yzerman tipping his hand on the subject boils down to two chances: Slim and fat.

Here is what the mock drafts are saying:

No. 9 pick

Oliver Moore, C, USA NTDP. Speedy center with playmaking ability should make an impact sooner rather than later. One mock has him going as high as No. 5.

David Reinbacher, D, Kloten (NL): Two years in Switzerland saw the Austrian native develop to the point where he could contribute to an NHL team as soon as this season, although thats far from a certainty.

Axel Sandin Pellikka, D, Skellefteå AIK (U20 Sweden): He and Reinbacher head the class on defense in the early rounds. A good skater who handles the puck well.

Zach Benson, C, Winnipeg (WHL): Speed and skating ability have him tabbed as going as high as No. 6 in two mocks.

Gabe Perreault, RW, USNTDP (U18): The all-time scoring leader for the NTDP, making the most of his time on a line with Will Smith and Ryan Leonard, who are both expected to be gone by the time the Red Wings make their selection.

Eduard Sale, RW, Brno (Czechia) Consistency is the biggest question surrounding his game.

Dalibor Dvorsky, C, AIK (Allsvenskan): The young center has excelled during international play for Slovakia. Might be more of a long-term project, but has plenty of upside.

Colby Barlow, LW, Owen Sound (OHL): Another offensive threat whose draft spot depends on what teams see in the rest of his game.

Ted Kulfan of the Detroit News takes a look at Detroit's defense and I am pointing out the prospects,

Johansson, 22, had 15 points in 53 games with the Griffins and appeared to be on his way to an NHL call-up before a season-ending injury in March (Edvinsson was promoted instead).

The Wings believe Johansson could battle for a roster spot in training camp.

"Albert actually had a great season," said Shawn Horcoff, Red Wings assistant general manager/Griffins GM. "Albert last year made some adjustments to his offseason training. He's always been a great skater, a smart player, good passer of the puck, but his frame was underdeveloped. He made some changes back in Sweden on who he was training with, and they paid huge dividends. He was stronger this year and able to sustain the wear and tear of professional hockey."

Wallinder, a 2020 second-round pick, will turn 21 in July. Wallinder, with 26 points (seven goals, 19 assists) led all Swedish players under the age of 21 in scoring in the Swedish Hockey League.

Wallinder (6-foot-4, 190 pounds) made apparent progress while playing against good competition in Sweden.

"His skating has really improved, as has his puck-handling and his play," general manager Steve Yzerman said. He's maturing as a young man as well, so we have optimism for him."

In the pipeline: The Wings signed Antti Tuomisto (a 2019 second-round pick) in March and he'll play in Grand Rapids. A right-hand shot, Tuomisto played collegiately at Denver then turned pro in Finland, where the Wings saw development. Jared McIsaac, Donovan Sebrango and Eemil Viro are recent draft picks who had up-and-down seasons in Grand Rapids and Toledo. All three remain prospects, but need to take steps forward next season.

Shai Buium (2021 second-round), a junior at Denver, took modest steps last season but is several years from being NHL-ready.
