Another Comeback Win For The Wings

02/10/2024 at 7:26pm EST

from Ansar Khan of Mlive,

Jake Walman said his legs were shaking as he skated in on goaltender Casey DeSmith 23 seconds into overtime Saturday during his first career penalty shot.

David Perron said Walman was probably thinking of the celebration that would follow.

Walman calmy buried the shot to cap a tremendous comeback and the Detroit Red Wings defeated the Vancouver Canucks 4-3 at Little Caesars Arena....

Lalonde lauded Alex DeBrincat, 5-8 and 180 pounds, for fighting Ian Cole, 6-1 and 225 pounds, at 17:51 of the second period after the Canucks had scored three unanswered goals to take a 3-1 lead.

“Awesome,” Lalonde said. “It’s the second time he’s done it. Our little run into January started with him fighting (Nashville’s Roman) Josi. My son texted me after that game (5-4 overtime win and he’s like, ‘That’s going to be a turning point in your season.’ I was like, ‘Have you notch watched us.’

“When someone like that does that, it just shows some character. When you fight out of your weight class like that and you handle yourself well like that, I think that just lifts the group. That was a nice spark for sure.”

from Ted Kulfan of the Detroit News,

The Wings overcame a 3-1 deficit entering the third period against a Canucks team that entered the game with the NHL's best record. But the Wings didn't seem bothered playing from behind against the powerful Canucks.

"The belief comes from our room," Walman said. "We have a great group of leaders who've done it before. They bring confidence to the group and in games like this, it just builds confidence for us. That's going to be a team (Vancouver) at the end, so it's good we showed up (Saturday) and battled."

A key to the Wings' comeback ability has been the depth of scoring in the lineup.

The Wings are getting offense from a variety of sources. Ten players have scored at least 10 goals, an indication of the Wings' depth.

Coach Derek Lalonde acknowledged the veteran presence in the Wings' lineup, but pointed to the depth compared to recent seasons. Daniel Sprong (his 14th goal) and Michael Rasmussen (11th goal) scored third-period goals Saturday to pull the Wings even.

"It's probably a little bit of the veteran presence, and they have a calming effect and poise in those situations," Lalonde said. "But probably credit to the depth also."

David Perron sees the Wings growing and learning how to win with each passing game.

"We win in different ways," Perron said. "That's what so special about us. Our details keep getting better every single game. We understand how important every puck is in the defensive zone and to play the right way. We'll get better and better and that's what is real exciting about our team."

Chet

the NHL has 5 of its 6 games airing right now in the second intermission, with very little other sports competition tonight. who is in charge of these start times? this is just f*cking idiotic.
