A Coaching Change over The Summer?

04/01/2024 at 4:15am EDT

from Bob Duff of Detroit Hockey Now,

An NHL source is telling Hockey Now that the possibility of a coaching change is something that is being pondered by Detroit Red Wings GM Steve Yzerman.

According to the source, Yzerman might be considering a change in his coach in the offseason were the Red Wings to continue their free fall out of a Stanley Cup playoff position. And if that is indeed the route he decides to take, the man at the top of the list of desirable candidates on Yzerman’s short list would be former St. Louis Blues coach Craig Berube....

Current head coach Derek Lalonde is in the second year of a three-year pact with the club. Certainly, there is cause of concern within the team’s performance. Slow starts and competent puck management and defensive structure remain frequent issues.

Another NHL source was telling Hockey Now that on Friday, Yzerman read the riot act to his coaching staff and players regarding their lackluster performance of late....

Of course, it’s well known within Detroit hockey circles that Yzerman is tight-lipped about any moves he’d be considering. Only a select few within his inner circle would be privy to such infomation. Generally, nothing of substance leaks out of Detroit. That being the case, it’s always wise to take any rumors relating to Yzerman and the Red Wings with at minimum a grain of salt.

As Duff says himself:

That said, as much as I liked what I read, I have a hard time believing it's truth.  I do not believe Lalonde is right for this group.  I also hope Yzerman did rip into the team because they need to be told something other than, "well, the fancy stats say we should have won the game".

Berube...that's a hire I could get behind.

The famous NHL source. If there were someone within the bowels of the organ-I-zation leaking information I doubt that Yzerman would tolerate him being around for long, unless he wanted it put out.

Every nights schedule is going to have twists and turns now.  Do we pull for Isle to beat Philly in regulation?  Any OT result hurts the Wings.  All moot if the Wings dont add points against a very hot TB team priming for the playoffs - must be the effects of the serial winner Jeff Blashill.  Tampa Bay has left the true Peloton of Suck in its wake to fight for one spot.  9 games ago the Lightning trailed Philly by 2 points, now ahead of them by 7.

Each horizontal line equals 2 points or one win.

In instances like this, I root for the team the Wings are chasing to lose.  Then worry about the next day.

Capitals remaining schedule is still pretty challenging, Flyers remaining schedule is relatively easy, but they managed to lose to Chicago at home 1:5. And I am still worried about the under the radar Islanders, they can easily overcome us and Capitals and Flyers.

Everything written by Mr Duff I take with a grain of salt. Hes the guy who reported by his sources, Babcock signed a multi year contract with the Wings when in reality, he went to Toronto. This sounds like click bait.

Agreed.

If it is true, and I am not a huge fan of Lalonde and I do not dislike him but Yzerman has to shoulder some of the blame.

You bring in players like Petry, Copp and Gostisbehere (his defense is atrocious) it doesn't make it any easier on a rookie coach.

Many of us wanted a seasoned coach not a Newbie (a Newzy?)

I am still not happy signing all these FAs in the last off season to emulate Seattle's model. Changing philosophies mid stream will just about guarantee you end up pissing on yourself.

Berube would bring a whole different attitude to how the Wings play......

I gotta say the coaching staff looks pretty inept at this point.  There are plenty of places to point fingers, but most of them are at Lalonde.  Poor defensive schemes, bad habits with the puck, no forecheck on most nights, these are coaching issues.  Theyve gone unaddressed.

The Wings were never gonna be a finals team this year, but it isnt a stretch to say that their place in the playoffs should have had a bow on it two weeks ago.

And I REALLY dont like Lalondes presser behavior/personell behavior.  The call outs, especially towards our rookies, are inappropriate.  And, minus information we arent aware of, I totally disagree with Sprong benched game after game.
