Wings Sign Marc Staal For One Year

added 1:13pm, Press release is below.

DETROIT – The Detroit Red Wings today agreed to terms with defenseman Marc Staal on a one-year contract extension.

Staal, 34, was one of two Red Wings to play all 56 games during the 2020-21 season (along with Filip Hronek) and ranked among team leaders with 20 penalty minutes (T7th), 58 hits (7th), 45 blocked shots (7th) and 18:25 average time on ice (5th). The 6-foot-4, 209-pound blueliner hit a pair of milestones last season, skating in his 900th NHL game on Jan. 28 at Dallas and reaching 150 NHL assists on April 28 vs. Chicago. After spending the first 13 seasons of his career with the New York Rangers, Staal was acquired by the Red Wings in a trade on Sept. 26, 2020 along with a second-round pick in the 2021 NHL Entry Draft, which was part of the package that allowed Detroit to trade up from 23rd to 15th overall in the first round to select goaltender Sebastian Cossa, in exchange for future considerations. Staal has appeared in 948 NHL games since 2007-08, registering 198 points (46-152-198) and 452 penalty minutes. He’s also played 107 Stanley Cup Playoff games, contributing 20 points (7-13-20) and 42 penalty minutes. Staal was an NHL All-Star in 2010-11, a season in which he produced a career-best 29 points (7-22-29) in 77 games.

A native of Thunder Bay, Ontario, Staal was originally a first-round pick (12th overall) of the Rangers in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft. Prior to turning professional, Staal racked up 123 points (23-100-123) in 236 Ontario Hockey League games with the Sudbury Wolves from 2003-07. He capped off a decorated major-junior career in 2006-07, captaining the Wolves en route to capturing the Max Kaminsky Trophy as the league’s most-outstanding defenseman and Wayne Gretzky 99 Award as most-valuable player of the playoffs, while earning a spot on the OHL First All-Star Team and CHL First All-Star Team. On the international stage, Staal helped Canada win back-to-back gold medals at the 2006 and 2007 IIHF World Junior Championships and was named the tournament’s best defenseman in 2006. He previously captured a gold medal at the 2003 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge and debuted for the men’s national team at the 2010 IIHF World Championship.

$2M plus a full NMC.

Staal played well and is a great leader, Full NMC does not bother me as we are not getting a high pick for Staal anyway. A little strange Staal does not want to get traded to go to a contender.

It doesn’t prelcude a trade, just gives him control of where he goes.

Good signing. Basically the only D I saw last year who made any effort to shove players out of the front of the net screening our goalies. Not the swiftest skater anymore, but made use of his size well in the D zone.

Believe it or not but Stetcher and Staal were one of the top D pairs in the leauge last season at even strength. Great value. I wouldn’t have minded Suter either, but he’s likely to be depth on a contender.

This feels like a Kenny Holland move.  Yes, he brings leadership, but I’m sure ther are plenty of other players who bring the same “leadership” while also still being impact players on the ice.  It’s not like we don’t have the cap room.

In my opinion, the only way this deal makes sense is if Detroit has become such a bottomless pit that they couldn’t convince anyone else to sign.  I would’ve been OK with this move if it came a month from now after they struck out on the UFA market.  To sign him before the UFA period even starts is a head scratcher, in my opinion.

If we were going to bring back a veteran for their “leadership” I would’ve thought Glenny makes more sense, seeing as he is an elite faceoff man and a fantastic penalty killer.

At the end of the day, I trust that Stevie Y and his brain trust know far more about building and running a team than I ever will.  Can’t wait to see what other moves they have up their sleeve.  I’m hoping they are able to leverage their excess of cap space to land more assets, be it picks or young players, in exchange for taking on the last year or two of a contract that has become an albatross for a cap strapped team.

Go vet for Mo to develop with.

What do our pairs end up being?  Staal, Leddy, Mo, Hro, Stetch, DDK with Lind as a number 7?

The Meal, those are the guys and I think McIssac will get some NHL games in too. He needs to win a spot.

With Merrill likely to stay in Montreal and Nemeth looking a little slow out there this is an ok signing. Hoping they sign McIllrath to be the first call up from GR.

Staal was very good on the ice for us last season

I would have preferred a bigger swing at a vet for one year who could get bring something back at the deadline. Suter is an example but there are others as well. Overall though it definitely doesn’t surprise me and won’t be the end of the world.

This signing does not mean SY is done with dmen in free agency.

Nope, but it certainly could.

Leddy   Hronek
Staal   Stecher
DDK     Lindstrom
Seider

See what that Staal signing does to the roster?

I understand, but couple of things. Besides Hamilton (who is not coming here), are there any must have free agents? Martinez is nice, but he is also 34 and probably looking for a multiyear deal. Suter will probably go to a contender. Who else? And secondly, we cannot expect DDK to be healthy all year long.

Honestly it’s not so much a must have, but more of a strategic move to gain assets. There are a lot of guys who will have more value than Staal at the deadline. You could overpay any one of them on a one year deal and then deal them at the deadline. Suter, handle, goligoski and probably a dozen more guys. Sure there are no guarantees but we have something called cap space which many teams won’t have. There was no need to make this signing now before testing out the market.

Now maybe it comes out that DDK doesn’t even play this year and everything changes. But for now I don’t like this move.

Fantastic signing.  He’ll really help seider.  He’s heavy inthw corners.  Long reach.  Reliable.  Doesn’t get in the way of his partner, communicates well.  Great signing.

Great signing. I hoped he’d be back for another season. Yzerman will still most likely add another d-man in free agency. No higher-end defenceman is going to sign a one year deal to come here for a rebuild. Additionally, Yzerman isn’t going to spend big dollars on any free agent at this point in our rebuild. This is a smart, low risk move which will help solidify the back end and adds another veteran presence to help mentor Mo and any other young players who may get a call up.

I’m with those who like this signing. It makes the defensive pairings pretty straightforward since Staal played so well with Stetcher last year.

I’m guessing it’ll play out something like this (with each pair being one LHD and one RHD)...
Leddy - Seider
DeKeyser - Hronek
Stetcher - Staal
Lindstrom

Dig it! I love this move!

Staal is very tenacious and so is young Seider. Hopefully Staal can help teach Seider to keep his head in different situations. Than Leddy can help pump up is offensive vison.

Smart move

It could be Seider starts in GR and gets called up. DDK is still sort of a question mark as I don’t know how his health is progressing. I don’t know if Lindstrom is waiver exempt this year. He is an RFA and needs a contract and could end up as a trade piece if Steve takes a cap casualty from another team. Or it could be Stecher.

I think saying he was “very good” is a bit of a stretch.  He was an improvement over Daley and Big E, but that’s a pretty low bar to get over.  Defensemen who are “very good” don’t play 18 minutes a game on a bottom 10 team, at least not here on planet earth.

If he had been “very good” he would have been playing a lot more minutes than that on a team desperate for talent.  If he had been “very good” he would have been playing well over 20 minutes a game, like Hronek did.

He and stetcher had the best tandem corsi by mid season.  They were good, especially on this team.  Where they slotted its even more admirable

I like this signing, Yzerman knows what the room needs.  Staal is a good tough vet dman presence on our 3rd pair, provides insurance for DDK’s back, and now everyone doesn’t have too much pressure on Mo or Gustav to be every day guys, gives them a chance to watch from above if needed.  If both of them are for the full 82 great, but it doesn’t force them to be. Whether all 7 are healthy all season, we know Yzerman is moving one or more of them anyway…

He and Stetcher had the best tandom Corsi by mid season, in a shortened season.  That’s only a 25-30 game sample, and a lot of people, myself included, give the lions share of the credit for that to Stetcher.

What happened after that?  He regressed and his Corsi fell back in line with expectations. Like I said earlier, I trust that Stevie knows what his team needs, but don’t pretend they brought him back because he’s an impact player.  He’s essentially another coach at this point.  Nothing wrong with that, but let’s call a spade a spade,

I thought Marc and Eric Staal might try to play together somewhere this season, maybe Stevie signs Eric to be our 2nd line center, holding down the fort until Veleno (or Ras) are ready to play full time in the top six.  Stranger things have happened.

There’s 0% chance that the $2M we’re paying him for 1 season will make or break anything.

There’s a >0% chance that having him around is good for one or more of the kids on our defense.

I’ve been thinking about this the past day…it’s not unexpected but it still surprised me a bit - mostly the NMC.  That’s the only bummer of this deal.

I would have joked, “play the kids” but with Cholowski gone now the kids pool is a little empty.

Now if FILPULLA gets resigned…then I’ll be pissed.

End of season how many players were on IR?  Bert, Larkin, fabbri etc.. naturally I’d imagine lots of stats on the team dipped.

It’s a good move. Staal is a steady, smart, experienced player. Good in the room, work ethic, veteran player. Doesn’t have to play every game. I like the signing.

Lets Go Red Wings!!!!!
