Your Latest CBA Update

from Katie Strang of ESPN New York,

Although there was limited communication between NHLPA special counsel Steve Fehr and NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly over the weekend, the stalemate between the sides continues.

Daly said Monday that the two sides had no plans to meet but that the union is ready and willing to meet as soon as necessary.

"No new news. We withdrew our most recent proposal on Friday, and now we are spending time thinking about our next proposal and how best to get closer to a resolution," Daly said by email. "We hope the union is doing the same thing. Given the fact that the union refused even to discuss our last proposal, it would appear that we still have a large gulf to bridge."

At least they read it.  And didn’t they respond with 3 other proposals in response to that proposal?  Isn’t that negotiating by definition?

This has gone from being annoying to frustrating to comical to sad to just plain pitiful

What a great shit-tosser Bill Daly is. He’s going to make a great follow-on commissioner.

“Aha! Now the players will be forced to agree to anything we propose!”

Canceling the Winter Classic this early—during a week when it’s not even really possible to do any negotiating because of the weather—sounds like the decision of a league which only paid for one week of good Republican PR strategizing.

If this happens, shiiiii…, I guess you probably really can write off the rest of the season as it shows the owners/Bettman clearly don’t want one.

NHL’s MO:

1) take gun, load
2) shoot foot
3) reload for next CBA expiration
4) repeat

sounds like the decision of a league which only paid for one week of good Republican PR strategizing.

That’s funny, if for no other reason than it gives off the perception you believe Republican campaign strategies are vile and mean-spirited, while Democrats just try to run clean and informative campaigns.

This is why I caution people lusting after Bettman’s retirement.  Bettman’s an annoying little twerp of a Commish.

Daly’s a bald faced liar when it suits him.  That’s worse, IMO.

And by the way, if the NHL cancels the WC that’s going to cost the NHLPA at least a point of HRR.

By mid to late December I think we’ll start getting a few ‘replacement player scenarios’ leaked out via backchannels that can’t be traced directly to the NHL.

Red Winger—

I may not like Frank Luntz, but for one week there he or his people seemed to be advising the NHL smartly when it comes to PR.

That all fizzled out, though, and they’re back to looking like bumbling, scornful morons again.
