WINNIPEG, Jan. 23, 2021 - The Winnipeg Jets announced today they have acquired forward Pierre-Luc Dubois and a third-round pick in the 2022 NHL Draft in exchange for forwards Patrik Laine and Jack Roslovic. The Jets will also retain 26 per cent of Laine's salary.

The native of Ste-Agathe-des-Monts, Que. led the Blue Jackets in points (49) and assists (31) in 2019-20 before recording a team-high four goals, six assists, and 10 points in 10 Stanley Cup playoff games. Dubois, the third overall pick in the 2016 NHL Draft who entered the NHL in 2017-18, has played 239 games and recorded 159 points (66G, 93A), along with 164 PIMs. He added another 19 points (8G, 11A) in 26 playoff games.

He he didn’t love the city of Columbus, PLD is going to LOVE living in The Peg.

That’s the funny thing Meal. There’s been a few notable players who haven’t enjoyed wpg at all. Maybe wpg figures he’ll sour there as well but they can try to flip him next year.

It’ll be interesting to see how it plays out.

Heh. if the Arctic Circle had a team, Torts would have sent him there.
(Yes, I’m aware he’s not the GM).

The key to this trade is Roslovic, and I’m not really familiar with him, 1st round pick, but that doesn’t always equate to blossoming star.
Laine > PLD, however, Laine is closer to UFA, PLD has more team control.
This does make CBJs better today for sure than they were yesterday.

Wow.
That’s a pretty good haul if CBJ can
are-sign Laine.
How good is Roslovic at center?
Is this the bigger stage Dubois wanted?

Wow, this is a great trade for CBS. A 40-goal scorer and a former first rounder for a guy who quit on his team.
Not so great for WPG.

Both same age/draft year. Still have about 4 more years rfa. But yes Laine > PLD in my opinion too.
Plus CBJ get a motivated hometown boy in Roslovic too.
Pretty good job by Jarmo

Shows how much Dubois is valued around the league.
And how it rare it is a big, strong already pretty productive
center pops loose at his age.
If Laine wanted to be the featured top-line sniper,
he will sure get the chance. Atkinson has been a great
offensive player but has struggled more recently.
Maybe he will bounce back with top defenders having to focus on Laine?
Is Roslovic one of the centers below Scheifle Laine didn’t want to play with?
I’m mostly joking - I know Roslovic didn’t get much chance at center himself.
But the larger question is does Columbus have a center who can reliably get
Laine the puck. It hurts missing Nyquist’s smarts and skill - he can set guys up
from the wing. Is Texier a center going forward?
With Anderson traded and Dubois gone Columbus is missing some of the heavy game they deployed so effectively against Tampa in 2019. But this is a great deal for them if Roslovic works out at center.
Winnipeg will be such an interesting situation to watch.
They now have a great 1-2 punch at center. And there is the family
connection for Dubois. But aside from the rapid Winnipeg fan base
and microscope (is that what Dubois wanted?) there are questions.
Columbus is more of a pleasant, rapidly growing family town than a
big city. But it might look like a balmy metropolis compared to Winnipeg
(no offense - they deserve a team as much as any city). Was it so personal with
Tortorella that Maurice is going to seem like a new age player’s coach?
Because it seemed like his approach to Laine was: you’ve gotta pay your dues, kid;
we have more well-rounded veterans where you want to play.

Just found out Roslevic is a columbus kid so he should be pumped to be coming to cbus. Good haul for them.

Seen elsewhere: “PLD and Liane wanted out of Ohio and Manitoba, respectively. So now one’s going to the Ohio of Canada, and the other to the Manitoba of the US.”

It’s kind of funny, but I wonder how many
people who make those jokes (other than U of M fans
in which case I totally get it!) really know anything
about Columbus. Or Ohio. Or if Ohio to them is just a
stand in for what they think of as a nondescript place?
The funny thing is, Columbus is pretty nice.
It’s not glitzy. You’re not obviously going to get
crashing ocean waves or snow-capped mountains.
But people are voting with their feet and the city is
absolutely blowing up. It’s a very very different city than it was
twenty or more years ago.
The joke used to be that it was a one-street town (High St.)
but that’s pretty dated. It’s not an older big city so it doesn’t have the
iconic skyline some places that were big cities a hundred years ago have.
But it’s absolutely thriving at least for most. I have kind of a funny perspective on
it having spent several years in Columbus and then sixteen-plus in NYC.
I adore NYC and may move back eventually depending on jobs and housing prices.
But I’m in Columbus now (came back for family before covid). And it’s
a great place to live. If I were an early-twenties single millionaire pro athlete, sure I’d be attracted to some other bigger cities.
But if people are thinking of depopulating depressing rust belt cities,
Columbus is sort of the opposite. Used to be if you lived in Columbus
you were from there lol. Now it’s crazy how many educated young professionals
have moved from other places all across the country.
Only thing is the skies during cold weather months are grey AF (though I here Pittsburgh is even worse). But we’re pretty used to that in Detroit, too.
(Ok just felt like over-explaining that into the ground - carry on..)
Posted by lefty.30 on 01/23/21 at 04:42 PM ET

If Roslovic is able to cut it as a top 6 center then Columbus made out like bandits. Even if they can’t resign Laine they can trade him for a small fortune, so as long as Roslovic doesn’t bomb then Columbus truly made the best of a bad situation.
