Want You Hockey News In Spanish?

NEW YORK/TORONTO (October 22, 2019) – The National Hockey League® (NHL) announced today NHL.com has launched a Spanish language website, making it the ninth native language NHL website available to hockey fans. The new site, NHL.com/es, is part of the League’s ongoing efforts to reach new audiences and engage fans worldwide, sharing on- and off-ice stories of players, moments, and milestones in nine different languages.

Experienced, native Spanish-speaking hockey reporters will provide fans with original hockey stories and videos, offer a unique perspective on daily hockey news coverage, share player profile pieces, and report from behind-the-scenes at League events.

“We continue to see a strong appetite from NHL fans across North America and around the world for native-language hockey content,” said Steve McArdle, NHL Executive Vice President of Digital Media & Strategic Planning. “Our Spanish-language website will provide original, authentic NHL content. Stories will not simply be translated from English to Spanish but will be covered by experienced reporters and told in their own voices based on their unique perspectives.”

“The launch of NHL.com/es follows ‘Hispanic Heritage Month’ celebrated by the League for the first time this season as part of Hockey Is For Everyone,” said Kim Davis, NHL Executive Vice President, Social Impact, Growth Initiatives & Legislative Affairs. “We’re thrilled to be able to put a spotlight on members of our hockey family with Hispanic and Latinx heritage, from grassroots youth hockey players to today’s stars, from behind the bench to front office management – for the Spanish-speaking community in their native language.”

In addition to serving existing Spanish-speaking hockey fans, the site will also feature ‘Hockey 101’ content to welcome those who are new to the game. Features include hockey terms and definitions; a look back at the winningest franchises in NHL history; profiles of NHL pioneers; players, teams, and coaches to watch this season; and an overview of this season’s biggest storylines.

The launch of NHL.com/es complements efforts by numerous NHL Clubs to engage and serve the Hispanic community. Highlights include: the Los Angeles Kings, Vegas Golden Knights, and Chicago Blackhawks who continue to broadcast games in Spanish during the regular season on TV and radio; the Arizona Coyotes recently launched three official Spanish-language social media accounts; the Tampa Bay Lightning hosted their first Hispanic Heritage Night this season as part of their season-long outreach efforts; and last season the Dallas Stars hosted ‘Learn to Play’ programs in Mexico City.
