With the game tied 2-2 in the third, Kane tried to slip around Nick Bjugstad in the neutral zone, but his stick caught the Panthers forward in the face as he tried to swing it past his head. Bjugstad wiped blood from his nose, drawing a double-minor penalty that produced a pair of power play goals just nine seconds apart against the Sharks seventh-ranked penalty kill.
“It’s a tough play,” Kane said. “You don’t mean to high stick a guy, you’re just trying to get around him. I don’t know if he was really cut there.”
DeBoer pointed out that he lacked a “CSI kit” on the bench to test the veracity of Kane’s claim, but he isn’t blaming the power forward for the loss.
“You feel for Kaner,” the Sharks coach said. “It’s not an undisciplined penalty. He chips the puck by the guy and catches him with his stick. At that point we need a big kill, we need a big save, and we didn’t get either.”
Below, watch two incidents by Kane that were not called.
