Video- Matt Cooke Scores The First Goal For The Wild - Can You Kick A Puck In With Your Shin?

What do you think, should the goal have counted?

Me?  I am all for goals, let them all count unless it is thrown in the net!

At 1:04 of the first period in the Kings/Wild game, video review confirmed the referee's call on the ice that Kyle Brodziak's shot deflected off Matt Cooke's skate and into the net in a legal fashion. The determining factor was that the speed of the puck propelled it into the net and that Cooke's skate only redirected it. According to Rule 49.2 "A puck that deflects into the net off an attacking player's skate who does not use a distinct kicking motion is a legitimate goal." Good goal Minnesota.

Perhaps he was just trying to locate the puck’s Achilles tendon?

I seriously could not believe they allowed this goal. Cooke clearly positions his leg - which is connected to the foot for those refs that are unaware of this physiological fact - and directs the puck in past Quick. Ridiculous, but this is typical of early NHL games, The refs want to call it close - including the stupid boarding call against Clifford in the 1st as well.

Paul, I have often thought the same thing… they want goals in the game, so are there merits to eliminating or adjusting the rules that prevent kicking the puck in, deflecting from above the cross-bar, etc.?

The safety arguments are reasonable… skates are sharp and sticks are no slouch either when they get up on someone. But I’m wondering if the safety aspect is overblown.

The Kings get screwed by the Toronto war room at least once a year, so hopefully that is it for the season! #BS
